In 2000 hadden naar schatting 30.000 Syriërs toegang tot internet, ongeveer 0,2% van de bevolking. De Syrische Telecommunicatie-Etablissement behield een monopolie op vaste internetinfrastructuur. In 2021 gebruikten circa 8,5 miljoen mensen internet, zo’n 46–47% van de bevolking. Syrië kende landelijke internetblackouts in 2012 tijdens veiligheidsoperaties.
