Cerebras (NASDAQ:CBRS) surges 17% as AI-chip rally coincides with strong short interest

NEW YORK, July 21, 2026, 15:13 EDT

  • Shares hovered around $206.56, rising 16.8% in early Nasdaq trade.
  • On June 30, short interest accounted for 16.9% of the public float.
  • The shares stayed 33.6% lower than their initial closing level.

Cerebras Systems Inc. surged 16.8% on Tuesday, topping gains among artificial-intelligence chip stocks. Shares were trading at $206.56 in afternoon trade, close to their intraday peak. Nasdaq’s regular session was ongoing.

Cerebras shares shifted in the absence of an intraday operating update on its investor page, where the most recent posting was from July 9. As a result, market positioning remained the most apparent short-term signal.

As of June 30, short interest totaled 13.53 million shares, accounting for 16.9% of the float and climbing 66.3% over two weeks, reflecting a heavily crowded position.

Cerebras’s short float was 6.6 times higher than AMD’s, 11.3 times greater than Broadcom’s, and 12.7 times above Nvidia’s. These numbers do not indicate short covering, but they illustrate how Cerebras could outperform its rivals when chip sentiment shifts.

Cerebras climbed 11.7% above its IPO price of $185, but the stock still traded 33.6% under its debut closing level of $311.07. Volatility persisted.

Trade remains split on fundamentals. Revenue for the first quarter climbed 94% to $193.4 million. Cerebras projected 2026 core gross margin at 38%-41%, down from 47% seen in the first quarter.

The IPO at $185 per share gave the company a fully diluted valuation of $56.43 billion. Tuesday’s share price gives an implied valuation of around $63 billion based on that share count. This initial estimate represents approximately 73 times the midpoint of projected 2026 core revenue.

Bulls are investing in upcoming capacity. The OpenAI agreement is valued at over $20 billion and spans 750 megawatts. Chief Executive Andrew Feldman stated earlier this month, “We are contracting significant capacity for 2027.” Cerebras

Success depends on execution. Two affiliated clients accounted for 74% of revenue in the first quarter. OpenAI was responsible for $16.9 million in revenue during the period.

Risks persist. A rally driven by positioning may unwind rapidly. Reduced margins, postponed data-center projects, or reliance on a limited number of customers might hinder contract conversion.

Tuesday’s rally appears to be driven by a shift in investor positioning rather than an adjustment based on earnings. Sustained revaluation will still depend on high-margin revenue generated through contracted capacity.
