Google DeepMind: Merging AI Empires for “Responsible” Genius Machines

Google was into AI before it was cool – using machine learning for search rankings and ads since the 2000s, acquiring DeepMind in 2014, and inventing core technologies like the Transformer in 2017 (which enabled the current LLM revolution). Expect Google to push AI everywhere: You’ll have Google’s AI in your phone (personal assistant with conversational skills), in your workplace (Google Workspace with generative features), in healthcare (DeepMind’s Med-PaLM is already being tested to answer medical questions with expert-level accuracy), and more. And if DeepMind’s past is any indication, they’ll also be publishing nature and science papers about AI discovering new algorithms or achieving feats like controlling nuclear fusion reactors (which DeepMind did in 2022). They want the prestige of leading in AI science, not just deploying a clever chatbot.
In values, Google’s message is “AI for good, AI for all, but done responsibly under our principled guidelines.” It’s a bit of a corporate line, but they do invest in fairness, bias reduction, and inclusion (for instance, Google’s model training pays attention to covering many languages – Bard launched in 40+ languages, whereas OpenAI’s ChatGPT initially was strongest in English). This made Meta the flag-bearer for open-source LLMs, winning goodwill from developers and academics who had been left out of the GPT-4 closed regime.

While OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta dominate Western AI news, other significant entities shape the landscape as well:
- Microsoft: Though not developing its own foundation models from scratch (instead investing in OpenAI), Microsoft is crucial in this ecosystem. It has effectively “exclusive commercialization rights” to OpenAI’s most advanced tech. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella has described AI as the “new runtime of the future”, infusing everything Microsoft offers. With products like Bing Chat (which uses GPT-4) and Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft is putting AI assistants in search, web browsing, programming (GitHub Copilot X), and every Office app. Nadella’s vision is a “copilot for every person and every task”.
