Cape Verde is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, approximately 570 kilometers (350 miles) off the northwest coast of Africa. It consists of an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands and several islets, with a total area of about 4,033 square kilometers (1,557 square miles). The islands are divided into two groups: the weathered, dry islands of the Barlavento to the north and the more fertile, green islands of the Sotavento to the south. Cape Verde has a diverse cultural heritage influenced by Portuguese and African elements, and its economy is primarily based on services, remittances, and tourism. The official language is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole is widely spoken among the population. The country is known for its scenic landscapes, music, and vibrant culture.
