Samsung was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul as a trading company and later diversified into electronics in the late 1960s, becoming South Korea’s largest chaebol. After Lee Byung-chul’s death in 1987 the group was split among family branches, but the Lee family still controls via cross-shareholdings and Samsung Group accounts for about 20% of South Korea’s GDP. Samsung Electronics, headquartered in Suwon, is the crown jewel and one of the world’s largest tech companies, dominating memory chips and operating major display and foundry businesses.
