Xbox Game Pass Just Changed Everything: 50% Price Hike, New Plans, and 75+ Day-One Games

Xbox Game Pass Just Changed Everything: 50% Price Hike, New Plans, and 75+ Day-One Games
  • Three new tiers: Xbox Game Pass Core becomes Essential ($9.99/mo), Standard becomes Premium ($14.99/mo), and Ultimate stays as the top tier [1].
  • Ultimate soars in price: Game Pass Ultimate jumps from $19.99 to $29.99/month (a 50% increase) [2] [3]. (PC Game Pass also rises from $11.99 to $16.49 [4].)
  • Expanded game libraries: All plans get more titles (now including PC games and cloud access). Ultimate now guarantees 75+ day-one releases a year [5]. Premium covers 200+ games (new additions include Diablo IV and Hogwarts Legacy [6]). Essential offers 50+ curated games, online multiplayer, and unlimited cloud streaming [7].
  • New perks added: Ultimate includes Fortnite Crew (Battle Pass + 1,000 V-Bucks monthly) and Ubisoft+ Classics (30+ back-catalog titles) at no extra charge [8] [9]. Cloud gaming quality jumps to 1440p for Ultimate [10].
  • Boosted rewards: Ultimate subscribers can now earn up to $100/year in Microsoft Store credit [11] (Premium $50, Essential $25 [12]).
  • Big game drop: Over 45 titles launch on Game Pass today, including Hogwarts Legacy and a swath of Ubisoft classics (Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rayman, et al.) [13] [14].

Overhauled Tiers and Pricing

On Oct. 1, 2025, Microsoft announced a major overhaul of Xbox Game Pass [15]. The old Core plan is now Game Pass Essential ($9.99/mo) and Standard becomes Game Pass Premium ($14.99/mo), while Game Pass Ultimate remains the top tier. In the U.S., Essential and Premium keep their prices; Ultimate is raised to $29.99/month [16] [17]. (Microsoft also quietly raised the PC Game Pass price to $16.49/month [18].) Xbox says the hikes reflect a much larger game catalog and new benefits. As Xbox’s announcement put it, “Ultimate is now priced at $29.99/month, reflecting the expanded catalog, new partner benefits, and upgraded cloud gaming experience” [19].

What Each Plan Gets

Microsoft is pitching the new tiers as tailored for different playstyles. Game Pass Ultimate (now $29.99) is billed as “the best of everything.” It guarantees 75+ day-one releases per year (up 50% from last year) [20], including upcoming blockbusters like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Ninja Gaiden 4 [21]. Ultimate still includes all Xbox, PC, and cloud games in the 400+ title library, plus EA Play vault access. New perks for Ultimate include: Ubisoft+ Classics (adds 30+ Ubisoft back-catalog games) and Fortnite Crew (Battle Pass and V-Bucks) at no extra cost [22] [23]. Cloud gaming is “exiting beta” and on Ultimate is now supported up to 1440p resolution with priority access [24] [25].

Game Pass Premium (formerly Standard, still $14.99) now spans Xbox console, PC, and cloud. Its library expands to 200+ games [26]. Notably, Microsoft added several recent hits to Premium today (e.g. Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy) [27]. Premium now gets unlimited cloud gaming too, so you don’t need Ultimate just to stream titles. In an Xbox briefing, Microsoft’s Dustin Blackwell explained that “bigger game libraries, including PC games, [are] across each of the plans,” and that Unlimited cloud gaming is “new to Essential and Premium subscribers” [28]. Going forward, Premium subscribers are promised to receive all new Xbox Game Studios titles within a year of launch (with the one exception being future Call of Duty releases) [29] [30].

Game Pass Essential ($9.99) is targeted at players who want “the essence” of Game Pass. It now offers a curated catalog of 50+ games playable on both console and PC, all fully playable via the cloud [31] [32]. (Previously the Core tier was console-only.) Essential includes unlimited cloud streaming and online multiplayer, plus in-game perks for big free-to-play titles like Warzone and LoL [33]. Xbox notes that existing Core members will be automatically migrated to Essential, and Standard to Premium [34] [35].

Massive Game Additions

Microsoft also loaded Game Pass with fresh content today. Ultimate (and all higher tiers) gets over 45 new titles. Highlights include Hogwarts Legacy (available on console, PC, and cloud) and a slew of Ubisoft classics – dozens of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rayman, and other titles pulled from Ubisoft+ Classics [36] [37]. In fact, PureXbox calls today’s drop an “absolute MEGA drop,” noting that the Ubisoft integration and the surprise addition of Hogwarts Legacy significantly bolster the Ultimate library [38]. All these games add real value: Ubisoft+ Classics alone normally costs ~$16/month, and Fortnite Crew ~$12/month, yet they’re now bundled into Ultimate [39] [40].

Rewards and Extras

Xbox also revamped its rewards system. Ultimate subscribers can now earn up to 100,000 points per year (equivalent to $100 in credit) simply by playing games [41]. Premium members get up to 50,000 points/year ($50), and Essential 25,000 ($25) [42]. Purchases of Game Pass games earn bonus points too. As Blackwell notes, “With Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft Plus Classics, those combined add about $28 a month in value to Ultimate subscribers” [43] – on top of the games themselves and the boosted rewards.

Industry Response and Analysis

Reactions have been mixed. Many gamers were caught off-guard by the steep Ultimate price hike. Analyst Christopher Dring (of The Game Business) points out that $30/month is a $120/year increase – “almost the price of two brand-new AAA games” [44]. Dring cautions, “It’s inevitable some Game Pass Ultimate users will unsubscribe at this hefty increase,” noting that surveys show being unable to justify cost is the top reason players drop services [45]. The Independent Survey company Circana (formerly IHS Markit) found that subscribers often cite price as a factor when canceling.

On the other hand, Dring and others note that heavy Game Pass users may still see good value. For example, The Game Business calculated that “the average Game Pass Ultimate subscriber would have to spend $550 just to buy all the games they play in a year” [46]. In other words, if a subscriber really uses the service, $29.99 may seem more palatable. Dring argues that with 75+ first-party titles, Fortnite, EA Play, and now Ubisoft’s catalog included, Game Pass is still “truly the ultimate game subscription service” [47]. He also highlights that most subscribers spend the bulk of their time on catalog titles, not day-one games, so the beefed-up mid-tier Premium ($14.99) may actually meet most players’ needs [48].

Microsoft itself has framed the changes as giving players more choice and value. In its announcement, Xbox said “we’re evolving Game Pass to offer more flexibility, choice, and value to all players” [49]. GameSpot quotes Xbox as saying it wants to “give people more than before to help justify the price hike” [50]. In a press briefing, Blackwell emphasized that all new plans are getting bigger libraries and new features: “What’s new for everyone across all three Xbox Game Pass plans is bigger game libraries, including PC games… There is also unlimited cloud gaming, which is new to Essential and Premium subscribers” [51].

Wider Context – Competition and Strategy

This overhaul comes as Xbox leans heavily on subscriptions to offset stagnant console sales. Reuters notes Xbox has “made big bets on its subscription service… to counter sluggish console sales and economic uncertainty” [52]. It’s part of a broader trend of rising game subscription spending: The Game Business reports U.S. gaming subscription revenue was up 19% year-over-year through July 2025 [53]. Meanwhile, this change shifts the competitive landscape with Sony. PlayStation Plus’s tiers remain cheaper – PS Plus Premium is still $17.99/mo [54]. PushSquare observes that Xbox’s Ultimate would cost $360 a year versus PS Plus Premium at $160/year [55]. Sony’s service includes far fewer day-one releases, so Xbox’s higher price may be aimed squarely at players who prize immediate access to new games.

In summary, Microsoft has retooled Game Pass with huge content and feature upgrades – but at a steep cost. Key takeaways: Ultimate subscribers get much more (75+ day-one games/year, Ubisoft and Fortnite add-ons, better cloud streaming, 100K rewards points) [56] [57], while Essential and Premium become much richer offerings at the same price [58] [59]. As tech journalist Tom Warren (The Verge) notes, this “revamps” Game Pass tiers, justifying the Ultimate hike with “a variety of upgrades across all of its Xbox Game Pass tiers” [60]. Fans will now watch whether the value plays out – and how many gamers stick with Game Pass at these new prices.
