SaskPower warns of Sunday shutdown after widespread outages hit southwest Saskatchewan

REGINA, Saskatchewan, Jan 4, 2026, 14:33 ET

SaskPower will carry out a planned power outage from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday in parts of southwest Saskatchewan to complete emergency repairs to damaged poles, SwiftCurrentOnline reported. The utility said customers west of Highway 37 would be affected. 1

The planned shutdown follows multiple unplanned outages across the region on Saturday, when SaskPower said crews were investigating and did not initially provide estimated restoration times. The back-to-back interruptions matter for rural communities where outages can cascade as crews diagnose faults and then take lines offline to make repairs. 2

SaskPower says it posts outage updates on its website, through MySaskPower and the SaskPower app, and on X, including estimated restoration times when they are known. The utility also says outages affecting fewer than 25 properties may not appear on its map, and customers should report service interruptions directly. 3

In an update at 11:17 a.m. on Saturday, SaskPower said crews had been dispatched and were determining the cause and repair time for an outage reported in Cadillac and Ponteix and surrounding areas. 4

By 2:10 p.m., SaskPower said crews were responding to an outage report covering areas including Wymark, McMahon and Lac Pelletier, as well as areas south of Swift Current. 5

At 3:22 p.m., the utility said crews were continuing to investigate the cause and repair time for an outage reported east of Gull Lake, including Webb and nearby areas. 6

Later, at 4:39 p.m., SaskPower said crews were on site for an outage reported north of Cadillac to Ponteix and estimated power would be restored around 6:30 p.m. 7

SaskPower’s online outage map showed no unplanned outages as of its 4:00 p.m. update on Saturday, though the utility’s status can change as crews find new faults or shift repair plans.

But the cause of the outages had not been publicly detailed, and SaskPower says planned outages are subject to change if repair conditions or system needs shift. 8

SaskPower, a provincial Crown corporation, directs customers to report outages through its outage centre phone line or online reporting tools while crews work to restore service and stabilize the system. 9
