Mae Lao PM2.5 Nearly Doubles Nathrop’s as “Good” Ratings Mask Different Risks

MAE LAO, Thailand, July 15, 2026, 19:05 ICT

Mae Lao’s PM2.5 reading was nearly twice Nathrop’s on Wednesday, yet both locations carried IQAir’s “Good” air-quality label. For investors and operators using environmental data to assess travel and outdoor-business risk, the more important finding is that each result rests on one anonymous monitoring station. IQAir

The readings were not equally fresh. Mae Lao’s latest observation was stamped 16:00 local time, more than three hours before filing, while Nathrop’s was recorded at 05:00 MDT, about an hour earlier. A single green reading describes one point; it does not map the wider operating area.

Mae Lao recorded a US AQI of 41 and PM2.5 of 7.3 micrograms per cubic metre, compared with Nathrop’s AQI of 21 and PM2.5 of 3.8. PM2.5 means particles no wider than 2.5 microns. On those figures, Mae Lao’s particulate level was 92% higher and its AQI was 95% higher.

The near-term path is more revealing than the shared green label. IQAir’s three-day forecasts average 54.0 for Mae Lao, about 60% above Nathrop’s 33.7. Mae Lao rises above the 50-point ceiling for “Good” on Thursday and Friday, while Nathrop’s daily forecast remains in that band through Friday. IQAir

Nathrop nonetheless has the larger forecast swing, 20 AQI points from low to high against Mae Lao’s seven. Mae Lao therefore carries the higher absolute exposure, while Nathrop presents more change risk from a cleaner starting point. That distinction can affect decisions on outdoor work, guest activity and event timing.

Thailand’s Meteorological Department forecast isolated to scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain across the North through July 19, with southwesterly winds of 10 to 15 km per hour. Rain is expected to increase on July 20 and 21. That wet-season setting is consistent with Mae Lao’s current low reading, although the agency did not issue an air-quality forecast.

Colorado presents a different seasonal risk. State authorities had wildfire-smoke advisories covering parts of southern and western Colorado until 09:00 MDT on Wednesday, though not Nathrop, while fine particulates were forecast to remain “Good” in several major population centres. Nathrop’s early reading fits the broader state picture, but the advisories show how sharply conditions can differ by county and mountain valley. colorado.gov

Colorado’s state dashboard separately cautioned that its live figures had not been corrected or validated. IQAir identified the contributors behind the Mae Lao and Nathrop readings only as anonymous. The data are useful as operational signals, but the exact values should be treated as preliminary snapshots rather than audited measurements.

But the comparison could change within hours. The observations were taken at different local times, monitoring coverage was sparse and the forecast figures are model estimates, not confirmed future readings. Rain, shifting winds or transported smoke could alter the gap, so Mae Lao’s 92% PM2.5 premium should not be treated as fixed.

The investor takeaway is narrow: Mae Lao has the higher near-term pollution level, while Nathrop’s forecast shows greater movement from a cleaner base. With one station in each location, confidence is stronger in the broad direction than in the precise size of the difference.
