Yardeni issued its latest forecast on Wednesday, increasing its target to 8,400 from 8,250. The company also updated its 2026 earnings projection to $375 per share, up from $330.

Risks: Inflation continues to exceed the target, with no guarantee of rate reductions. Trading volume stayed under its typical level. Another semiconductor selloff may swiftly limit the market’s breadth again.

Breadth data provides bulls with stronger backing than the headline suggests. However, equal-weighted stocks continued to underperform, with chipmakers driving much of the gains. Investors are looking for wider market participation accompanied by higher volume.

Further analysis

What led to the S&P 500 increasing on August 12?
The index rose 0.26% as July inflation data came in as forecast. Shares in AI infrastructure companies surged as well. This mix tempered short-term rate concerns and boosted appetite for growth stocks.
Did Wednesday's rally extend beyond technology stocks?
Yes, but only in part. Advancers led decliners by a ratio of 1.7-to-1, with gains seen in eight sectors, and the Russell 2000 rising 0.61%. However, QQQ rose 0.73%, while the equal-weight S&P 500 ETF increased just 0.18%.
How near is the S&P 500 to setting another record high?
The benchmark ended the session at 7,748.50, putting it 0.58% under its 52-week peak of 7,793.68. While a new record appears attainable, lighter-than-normal volume means a breakout is yet to be validated.
What should S&P 500 investors focus on next?
Monitor if nontechnology sectors and equal-weight stocks begin to close the gap. Inflation continues to exceed the Federal Reserve’s target, with markets currently assigning a 62% probability to rates staying unchanged in September. Persistent weakness in semiconductors stands out as the most immediate risk to momentum.
