NEW YORK, August 18, 2026, 12:15 EDT – IMAX stock slid 2.1% as The Odyssey reached a quarter of its box-office objective set for 2026.
- The Odyssey has brought in $346.4 million globally for IMAX.
- This represents 24.7% of IMAX’s $1.4 billion box-office target for 2026.
- Analysts maintain a bullish outlook, though their average target is now below Tuesday’s price.
Shares of IMAX Corporation NYSE:IMAX declined by 2.1% on Tuesday, despite The Odyssey boosting the company’s cumulative IMAX gross to $346.4 million. The film now accounts for nearly one quarter of the annual box-office goal for the firm.
The gap is significant. IMAX is seeing faster operating momentum, yet most of that performance looks already reflected in the share price. At 10:56 EDT, the stock was at $51.29, compared with an average analyst target of $51.10.
China delivered the most recent data point. The Odyssey collected $13 million in China during the weekend, following $6.3 million made in previews. IMAX accounted for 53% of the film’s box office revenue in China while representing just 1% of all screens in the market.
| Odyssey IMAX measure | Verified result | Investor context |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide IMAX gross | $346.4 million | 26% of total global box office for the film |
| China debut, including previews | $19.3 million | Largest IMAX opening for a Nolan film in China |
| China IMAX market share | 53% | Captured with 1% of cinema screens |
| Latest global weekend | $47 million | Generated throughout the IMAX network |
The level of concentration is rare. In 2025, IMAX accounted for 3.8% of the worldwide box office from slightly more than 1,800 sites. The Odyssey captured a 26% share globally, roughly 6.8 times higher than the average for the network.
The $346.4 million IMAX haul for the film accounts for 24.7% of management’s $1.4 billion goal for 2026. That leaves around $1.05 billion to be brought in by releases still to come this year and by films continuing their runs.
| Global box-office milestone | Amount | Portion of 2026 target |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX total for 2025 | $1.28 billion | 91.4% |
| Company target for 2026 | $1.40 billion | 100.0% |
| The Odyssey so far | $346.4 million | 24.7% |
| Shortfall to target | $1.054 billion | 75.3% |
CEO Rich Gelfond described the film as “an IMAX box office phenomenon without precedent.” IMAX screenings are set to continue at least through mid-September, with Japan’s launch on September 11. Business Wire
The technical rarity of the format played a role. The Odyssey stands as the earliest feature film shot exclusively with IMAX film cameras. For its debut weekend, 41 IMAX 70mm venues brought in an average of approximately $153,000 each.
IMAX approached the period from a more solid foundation. Revenue for the second quarter increased 12% to $102.8 million. Adjusted earnings came in at 43 cents per share, surpassing the consensus estimate of 27 cents provided by Google Finance.
| Second-quarter measure | Q2 2026 | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $102.8 million | up 12% |
| Net-income margin | 15.5% | an increase of 2.2 percentage points |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $48.0 million | rose 23% |
| Adjusted EPS | $0.43 | soared 65% |
| First-half operating cash flow | $36 million | improved 19% |
Profit growth outpaced revenue gains. The adjusted EBITDA margin increased by four percentage points, reaching 46.6%. At the end of June, IMAX operated 1,876 systems in 91 countries and territories.
Valuation makes the bar higher. IMAX was valued at 70.2 times reported earnings and sat just 5.5% under its 52-week high. The market capitalisation was about $2.81 billion.
| Market measure | August 18 reading |
|---|---|
| Share price | $51.29 |

Wall Street maintains an optimistic outlook, but the range of targets varies significantly. Out of 10 analysts monitored by Google Finance, eight give the stock a Buy rating. Two suggest Hold, while none assign a Sell rating.
| Analyst or consensus | Recommendation | Price target | Upside/downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-analyst consensus | 8 Buy / 2 Hold / 0 Sell | $51.10 average | -0.4% |
| Steve Frankel, Rosenblatt | Buy | $60 | +17.0% |
| Michael Pachter, Wedbush | Buy | $54 | +5.3% |
| Drew Crum, B. Riley | Buy | $52 | +1.4% |
| Omar Mejias, Wells Fargo | Hold | $45 | -12.3% |
| Stephen Laszczyk, Goldman Sachs | Hold | $40 | -22.0% |
The range reflects ongoing investor debate. Ongoing demand for premium formats may boost cash flow and installation rates. However, the consensus target indicates that the market has largely priced in a standout performance in the second half.
Risks: Results are still vulnerable to factors such as film release schedules, audience interest and the Chinese market. A significant dip following a major blockbuster could challenge the sustainability of the present earnings multiple.
Endurance is the next measure. Retaining screens until September would increase the revenue share. Investors will need to assess if the broader lineup can maintain this pace.
