The National Transportation Safety Board pointed to a cracked “bearing race,” part of the engine-mount assembly connecting the engine to the wing, flagged by Boeing in 2011. “If fatigue isn’t handled properly, obviously it can become a safety-of-flight issue,” said air safety expert Anthony Brickhouse.
