The Hang Seng Index closed down 0.29% in Hong Kong on Friday, pressured by losses in shipping, casino, and healthcare stocks. Ctrip shares plunged 19% the previous day after news of a China antitrust probe, rattling investors. Semiconductor stocks rose, with Hua Hong Semiconductor up 7.39%. Shanghai Stock Exchange reopens Jan. 5: Shanghai Composite near 4,000 as AI-chip buzz builds

Mainland China’s A-shares resume trading Monday after a New Year break, with the Shanghai Composite last closing at 3,968.84, up 0.09%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 2.76% Friday, led by Baidu and Hua Hong Semiconductor gains. Shanghai Biren Technology surged 76% in its Hong Kong debut. Investors await China’s services PMI and December CPI data this week.
