Nuance Communications, acquired by Microsoft in 2022 for about $19.7 billion, pioneered ambient clinical intelligence and Dragon Medical used by more than 550,000 physicians. In 2020 Nuance launched Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) to securely capture doctor‑patient conversations and automatically generate clinical documentation. In March 2023 Nuance announced DAX Express, the first fully AI‑automated clinical documentation app combining ambient AI with OpenAI’s GPT‑4. By mid‑2023 DAX Express was being integrated into Epic’s EHR software as a “co‑pilot” for clinicians.
