US Utility’s Fusion Moonshot: Betting Billions on “Star Power” to Fuel the AI Era
The Tennessee Valley Authority plans to build a 350 MW nuclear fusion plant at a retired coal site in Tennessee, using stellarator technology from Type One Energy. The project targets rising electricity demand from AI and tech industries and is backed by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures. TVA also signed a deal to deploy six small modular fission reactors. No fusion plant has yet produced net-electricity output.
