Weekly Recap + Week Ahead: Tech Rebounds Before GDP

Tech rescued Friday; rates still set the risk
The ASX 200 finished a volatile reporting-season week 0.37% higher. Dicker Data led a Friday tech rebound, but sticky inflation, a 5.09% 10-year yield and next week’s GDP keep duration risk in focus.

What drove the week
- Reporting season overwhelmed the index signal. Monday and Tuesday gains were erased after hotter July inflation; Friday’s tech bounce restored a small weekly gain.
- Inflation revived the hike debate. July headline CPI was 3.5% year on year versus 3.3% expected; trimmed mean held at 3.6%. Three major banks now see another RBA increase by year-end.
- The currency and bond market tightened conditions. AUD/USD approached a 3½-month high while the 10-year yield ended at 5.09%.
- China sensitivity remains. Iron ore held below US$100/t; next week’s China PMIs add an external demand check for miners.
