NEW YORK, July 22, 2026, 12:02 p.m. EDT — The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 142 points midday, with two stocks leading most of the benchmark’s rise.
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI) rose 141.81 points as of 11:45 a.m. EDT. U.S. markets stayed open for standard trading hours.
- Caterpillar Inc. NYSE:CAT and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. NYSE:GS contributed about 99 points, accounting for almost 70% of the Dow’s total net gain.
- The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) rose by 0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite (INDEXNASDAQ:.IXIC) fell 0.11%.
The Dow gained 0.27%, reaching 52,366.45 in late morning trading. However, the majority of the climb came from just two of its highest-priced constituents.
This concentration is significant. The 30-member Dow uses a price-weighted approach, setting it apart from major indexes that are market-cap-weighted. As a result, movements in a stock’s share price have a greater impact on the index than the company’s overall size.
The index touched 52,511.21 earlier on Wednesday. By 11:45 a.m., it had given up a little more than half of its peak advance of 287 points.
The component data indicates the source of those points:
| Dow component | Share move | Dollar move | Approximate Dow points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar Inc. NYSE:CAT | up 1.00% | gained $8.93 | added 53 |
| Goldman Sachs Group Inc. NYSE:GS | rose 0.70% | up $7.63 | increased 46 |
| Johnson & Johnson NYSE:JNJ | advanced 1.91% | rose $4.79 | contributed 29 |
| NVIDIA Corp. NASDAQ:NVDA | climbed 2.29% | grew $4.75 | added 28 |
| Honeywell International Inc. NASDAQ:HON | gained 1.77% | added $4.06 | up 24 |
| Microsoft Corp. NASDAQ:MSFT | fell 2.31% | dropped $9.19 | lost 55 |
| Salesforce Inc. NYSE:CRM | slipped 3.12% | decreased $5.31 | lost 32 |
| Amazon.com Inc. NASDAQ:AMZN | down 1.52% | fell $3.76 | fell by 22 |
Initial figures are based on index and component movements recorded at 11:45 a.m. Minor discrepancies may occur due to rounding and timing of quotes.
The five leading names listed above added approximately 180 points, while the remaining 25 constituents collectively subtracted nearly 38 points.
Caterpillar’s 1% increase had a greater impact on the Dow than NVIDIA’s 2.29% advance, as Caterpillar’s higher share price resulted in a larger contribution to the index.
Microsoft contributed the biggest drag, with its drop subtracting about 55 points. Salesforce accounted for a further 32-point loss.
The same trend was seen on Tuesday, when 3M Co. NYSE:MMM and Caterpillar together contributed roughly 239 points to a 425-point surge in the Dow. The index finished the session up 385.38 points.
The market’s concentration did not indicate a broad sell-off. On the NYSE, gainers outpaced losers by a ratio of 1.25-to-1. The Nasdaq saw advancers ahead by 1.29-to-1.
Sectors reflected a defensive bias, with materials up 1.6% and utilities advancing 1.2%. Information technology posted the steepest losses.
Oil continued to act as the primary macroeconomic drag. Brent crude climbed 2.53% to $93.31, after temporarily moving above $95. The yield on the 10-year Treasury advanced to 4.642%.
Chevron Corp. NYSE:CVX rose 0.69% as crude prices advanced. Rising energy expenses continue to pose risks to margins and consumer demand in other sectors.
Markets priced in almost a 72% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady next week. A Reuters survey of economists also indicated expectations for rates to remain unchanged through 2026, though participants highlighted a persistent risk of further tightening.
Focus turns to Alphabet Inc. NASDAQ:GOOGL and Tesla Inc. NASDAQ:TSLA, as both are set to release results following Wednesday’s close. Sam Stovall at CFRA Research stated: “The magnitude of capex spending will be central to both Tesla and Alphabet.” Reuters
Risks: A further jump in oil prices may drive yields higher and undo cyclical advances. Poor outlooks in technology could resume the semiconductor downturn. The Dow’s reliance on price weighting also means the main index can be heavily influenced by a small number of high-priced stocks.
