Initial estimates are based on Thursday’s Reuters closing figures and Google Finance prices recorded from 10:02 to 10:04 EDT.

The Dow assigns weight to its 30 companies according to share price. On Thursday, a $1 shift in stock price represented approximately 5.94 points on the Dow.

Alphabet fell $24.66, dragging the Dow down by an estimated 146 points. Amazon.com declined $12.07, removing approximately 72 points from the index.

The combined movement of those shares accounted for roughly 43% of the Dow’s 507-point decline. Tesla dropped 14.5% but did not influence the Dow.

Alphabet was added to the Dow on June 29, taking the place of Verizon Communications . The adjustment broadened the index’s direct involvement in AI expenditure.

Oil prices declined on Friday, reducing some recent strain. Brent dropped to $97.82, and the 10-year yield decreased to 4.683%.

Relief stayed modest. Brent jumped 7% on Thursday, at one point touching $102.

“Investors are, to a certain extent, walking on eggshells,” Kristina Hooper, chief market strategist at Man Group , said. Reuters

In the coming week, the spotlight turns to the Dow as Microsoft , Amazon, and Apple prepare to announce their earnings.

Meta Platforms is set to release its results. The Federal Reserve’s rate decision is expected on Wednesday. On Thursday afternoon, futures reflected a 36% probability of a 0.25 percentage point hike.

Risks persist on both sides. A further surge in oil prices may push yields higher. Disappointing AI outlooks could intensify the technology sector downturn.

The Dow continued to be on track for its third straight weekly loss. Its early signs of strength were limited.
