Dow Jones Reaches Record High with Three Stocks Accounting for Almost One-Third of Two-Day Advance

NEW YORK, August 5, 2026, 12:05 p.m. (EDT) — U.S. markets opened for trading.

  • The Dow gained 434.60 points, closing at 54,520.48, after reaching an all-time high of 54,744.33.
  • Roughly 428 points, representing 32% of the Dow’s two-session gain, came from three components.
  • The payroll data due Friday is forecast to reveal an increase of 83,000 jobs, compared with 57,000 in the prior release.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 434.60 points, or 0.8%, reaching 54,520.48 around midday EDT. The index hit an intraday high of 54,744.33. The S&P 500 was little changed, and the Nasdaq Composite edged lower.

The margin was slim. Caterpillar Inc. , Amgen Inc. and Nvidia Corp. accounted for approximately 428 Dow points during Tuesday and Wednesday. This represented nearly 32% of the total 1,342-point gain for the index.

This concentration is significant since the Dow is price-weighted. In this index, a company’s share price, not its market capitalization, determines its impact. At present, a $1 move in a component’s stock price shifts the Dow by approximately 5.94 points.

Nasdaq Composite26,561.62down 0.09%

Broader market performance lagged. Dow transports slipped 0.8%, and utilities dropped 1.7%. Small caps were also in the red. This divergence indicates headline index gains outpaced overall investor risk appetite.

Reuters’ assessment uses Caterpillar data and late morning share changes for Amgen and Nvidia to calculate the contribution estimates. Estimates for Wednesday are based on the Dow’s current points-per-dollar measure.

Caterpillar led gains on Tuesday after posting a 24% increase in quarterly revenue, reaching $20.5 billion. The company’s management boosted its full-year revenue growth outlook. Demand associated with AI data-center projects continued to bolster the infrastructure outlook.

Amgen made the largest contribution to Wednesday’s point gain. The company’s revenue rose 10% to $10.1 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $6.29, topping the consensus forecast of $5.62. Amgen also lifted its earnings and revenue outlooks for 2026.

Chief Executive Robert Bradway said six core growth drivers “grew 26% year over year,” and brought in close to 70% of product sales during the quarter. The increase helped ease investor worries about older drugs. PR Newswire

Nvidia contributed around 44 points to the Dow as its stock climbed nearly 3.5%. Shares of Walt Disney Co. rose 2.9% following an adjusted profit that surpassed forecasts. However, the Nasdaq stayed modestly in negative territory.

Wall Street’s stance is still uneven among the four segments. FactSet’s average price target was lower than Amgen’s current share value. Nvidia continued to show the largest potential gain.

The difference stands out. Nvidia received the highest level of target backing, whereas Amgen accounted for the biggest projected Dow impact on Wednesday. Amgen’s share price was already above the average target, heightening the chance of a reversal following its post-earnings surge.

The gains over two sessions were also driven by broader relief in the macro environment. On Tuesday, Brent and U.S. crude dropped by over 5%, and expectations for rate hikes eased. On Wednesday, data showed slower private-sector hiring and a marginally softer services report.

The rest of the calendar focuses on employment statistics. Numbers listed as consensus reflect forecasts, not actual outcomes.

Friday marks the bigger test. Robust payroll or wage figures may reignite worries about rates. A weaker report would reinforce the relief trade that buoyed industrial and healthcare stocks.

Jack Ablin, the chief investment officer at Cresset Capital, issued a caution on Tuesday. “I’m not sure a handful of earnings reports justifies new records in the S&P.” Reuters

Risks: A strong jobs report might push Treasury yields higher. Oil prices could see a rebound. The Dow’s price weighting may work against the index if Caterpillar, Amgen or Nvidia decline.

The record stands unbroken for now. The Dow is climbing through a handful of strong contributors rather than widespread support. The upcoming employment report on Friday will indicate if this leadership can expand.

Further analysis

Is the Dow continuing its record-setting streak today?
At 11:39 a.m. ET, the Dow was at 54,507.26, rising 421.38 points, or 0.78%. Earlier, it hit an intraday peak of 54,744.33, topping Tuesday’s record close of 54,085.88. The index had pulled back about 237 points from its highest level of the session.
How widespread is the Dow rally today?
At 10:50 a.m., around one-third of the 649-point rise was driven by Amgen and Nvidia. As of 11:39, the Dow climbed 0.78%, with the S&P 500 up 0.09%. The Nasdaq was down 0.07% and the Russell 2000 slid 0.33%. The Dow’s price-weighted structure means a handful of expensive stocks can have an outsized impact.
Can slower job growth decrease the likelihood of further interest rate hikes?
ADP said private employers added 44,000 jobs in July, falling short of the 70,000 expected. June’s figure was revised lower to 95,000 from 98,000. Wages increased 4.4% for people staying in their jobs and 7.0% for those switching roles. Data presents a mixed picture. Investors are looking to Friday’s official payrolls report for cues on Fed policy.
Will declining oil prices continue to bolster the Dow?
Brent hovered around $79.42, well under the July high of $102. The yield on 10-year Treasuries stayed close to 4.63%, down from 4.747% last week. Softer oil prices and yields reduce strain on equities. Talks are still lacking detail, keeping the inflation picture unclear.
