- Newrez is set to pay close to $11 million in additional expenses and fines.
- The increase amounts to about 1.9 cents for each diluted Rithm share.
- Improved insurance monitoring is now seen as more important than the short-term financial impact.
Rithm Capital Corp. NYSE:RITM is set to incur almost $11 million in extra expenses and fines following a multistate mortgage-servicing agreement involving its Newrez subsidiary. The additional sum represents approximately 1.9 cents per Rithm diluted share.
This amounts to just 3.2% of Rithm’s distributable earnings for the second quarter and represents 3.6% of Newrez’s pre-tax operating profit for the quarter. The cash outlay appears manageable. However, the duration of the new monitoring requirements could be longer.
A total of 48 state agencies from 47 states agreed to a $15.5 million settlement. Authorities determined that Newrez had applied force-placed insurance to over 4,200 borrowers despite their existing coverage.

|---|---|---|
| Total settlement | $15.5 million | Encompasses earlier remediation |
| Borrower remediation | More than $4.5 million | Earlier identified and repaid |

Newrez worked with regulators to uncover the issue. The company is required to increase oversight of loans with force-placed insurance and improve other internal controls.
Lise Kruse, a regulator in North Dakota, stated that the penalties and oversight measures “underscore the importance of meeting state requirements to protect consumers.” The enforcement effort was headed by the District of Columbia. North Dakota Department of Financial Institutions

Analysts continue to expect notable upside. On average, their targets exceed both the current market price and June book value. These projections rely on Rithm maintaining earnings and managing mortgage-servicing risk.
Risks: The timing for booking settlement expenses remains uncertain. Additional failures in servicing oversight may result in extra penalties or customer refunds. Shifts in interest rates may also impact both the value of mortgage-servicing-rights and GAAP profits.
The immediate financial impact is limited. However, Newrez manages $865.2 billion in unpaid principal. With holdings at this level, tighter oversight is the key concern for investors.
