  • U.S. Natural Gas Prices Surge on Cold Weather and Record Inventory Drawdown Expectations
    February 5, 2026, 7:00 AM EST. March Nymex natural gas futures rallied 4.65% on Wednesday amid forecasts of extended cold weather in the U.S. Northeast, which is expected to increase heating demand. The Commodity Weather Group predicts very cold conditions through February 8. Traders anticipate a record weekly withdrawal of 379 billion cubic feet (bcf) from U.S. natural gas inventories, nearly double the five-year average of 190 bcf for this period. Production disruptions caused by recent Arctic blasts, including freeze-ups in gas wells and lower output in Texas, support the price rise. U.S. dry gas production stands at 111.2 bcf/day but demand has surged to 115.6 bcf/day. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently lowered its 2026 production forecast, while electric output rose 21.4% year-on-year, further supporting natural gas prices.
