  • Indian Markets Plunge Nearly 2% on US-Iran Tensions and Foreign Selling
April 2, 2026, 1:17 AM EDT. Indian benchmarks Sensex and Nifty dropped sharply on April 2, with the Sensex tumbling over 1,500 points (2.1%) and Nifty falling about 2.12% to near 22,250. The market slide was driven by escalating geopolitical tensions after US President Donald Trump threatened fresh military strikes on Iran within the next two to three weeks, pushing crude oil prices about 5% higher and heightening anxiety among investors. All major sectors declined, led by financials and banks. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) offloaded Rs 8,331 crore of Indian shares, deepening the downward pressure despite domestic institutional investors buying Rs 7,172 crore. Copper and other industrial metals also weakened amid concerns over upcoming conflict. Market participants brace for volatility amid uncertain geopolitical outlook and sustained foreign outflows.
