NEW YORK, July 28, 2026, 4:47 p.m. EDT — The closing bell signalled the end of regular trading, but the U.S. after-hours market continued with active trades.
- The Dow ended up 1.03% at 52,747.32, an increase of 537.24 points.
- The S&P 500 gained 0.21%, as the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.22%.
- Five of the Dow’s most expensive winners contributed roughly 453 points ahead of offsets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI) advanced 537.24 points on Tuesday, ending the session at 52,747.32 as several defensive and industrial stocks rose on strong earnings.
The gain was much larger than the overall market’s rise. The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) closed up 15.60 points at 7,428.78. The Nasdaq Composite (INDEXNASDAQ:.IXIC) slipped 55.17 points to finish at 24,876.91.
The Dow’s price-weighted makeup magnified the divide. Every $1 shift in a component represented roughly 5.94 points in the index. Five high-priced stocks contributed approximately 453 points, accounting for 84% of the total gain.

| UnitedHealth Group NYSE:UNH | $428.79 | rose $11.15, or 2.67% | lifts by 66 points |
| Boeing NYSE:BA | $221.56 | increased $10.06, or 4.76% | plus 60 points |

| Coca-Cola NYSE:KO | $88.27 | advanced $4.20, or 5.00% | up 25 points |
Dow-point impacts are calculated with a 5.94-point multiplier. Numbers may show minor variations due to rounding.
The weighting effect is illustrated by comparing Coca-Cola and Amgen. Although Coca-Cola gained a higher percentage, it contributed only about one-quarter as many points to the Dow as Amgen did.
The rally extended beyond technical factors. Advancing stocks in the S&P 500 outpaced decliners by approximately 2.5-to-1. Share trading volume totaled 17.2 billion, near the average of recent sessions.
Sherwin-Williams lifted its adjusted earnings projection for 2026 to a range of $11.80 to $12.20 per share. Adjusted earnings for the second quarter were $3.70, surpassing the analyst consensus of $3.52.
Chief Executive Heidi Petz gave a careful clarification. The updated outlook relied on “not a broad-based demand recovery,” she stated. Reuters
Boeing rose after reporting $631 million in free cash flow for the quarter. The company delivered 171 aircraft, marking its strongest quarterly figure since 2018. Boeing maintained its annual cash-flow projection of $1 billion to $3 billion.
Coca-Cola raised its full-year projection for organic revenue growth to roughly 5%. Comparable revenue for the quarter climbed 6% to $13.37 billion, surpassing forecasts.
The sector trend reinforced the rotation indicator. Healthcare climbed 2.4%, consumer staples added 2.0%, and materials were up 1.7%. Technology declined by 1.4%.
Chipmakers continued to underperform in the market. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 4.5%. Despite holding a 56% yearly advance, it traded roughly 25% under its record closing level from June 22.
“Part of it is value,” said Ross Mayfield, an analyst at Baird. He pointed to steady economic expansion, resilient employment conditions, and a revival in consumer expenditure. Reuters
The drop in oil prices contributed to the move. Brent crude finished down 4.8% at $84.09 per barrel. The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped 3.9 basis points to 4.602%.
Investors await the Federal Reserve’s decision on Wednesday. Rate markets indicated a 71% chance that rates will remain steady, while the likelihood of a quarter-point hike stood at 29%.
Visa NYSE:V delivered the headline earnings release after markets closed. The company reported adjusted earnings of $3.32 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $3.23, with revenue rising 14% to $11.63 billion.
Visa lowered its annual growth outlook. Shares fell roughly 1.3% to $361.96 in late after-hours dealing, though the change was provisional.
Microsoft NASDAQ:MSFT gained 1.1% ahead of its earnings announcement scheduled for Wednesday. With Tuesday’s closing price at $393.35, a 1% change in the stock would move the Dow by about 23 points.
Risks: An interest rate hike by the Fed may weigh on stocks and bonds. If Microsoft issues weak guidance or oil prices recover, the market rotation seen on Tuesday could be undone.
The session featured broader gains beyond semiconductors. However, the 537-point headline overstated the impact of the average stock, as a handful of high-priced shares accounted for most of the rise.
