McDonald’s global menu expansion under scrutiny as international sales rebound 1.5%

TORONTO, August 25, 2026, 04:20 EDT – McDonald’s ongoing world menu changes face industry attention following a 1.5% uptick in international sales.

  • More than 10,000 searches for “mcdonalds world heist menu” were recorded in Canada.
  • Seven time-limited menu items are inspired by offerings from six McDonald’s markets around the world.
  • International same-store sales rose by 1.5%, down from 4.0% in the same period last year.
  • McDonald’s was quoted around $272.83 ahead of the opening bell following a 0.59% rise on Monday.

McDonald’s Corporation is attracting renewed Canadian attention through its second World Menu Heist campaign. The initiative assesses if reintroducing popular items from other markets can boost customer visits, eliminating the need to develop entirely new products.

Stock chart for NYSE:MCD

The investment story extends beyond a single burger. McDonald’s has introduced seven items from six international menus into the Canadian market. This provides a scalable source of tried-and-tested recipes and promotional strategies.

This comes as momentum slows. Comparable sales in International Operated Markets increased by 1.5% last quarter, compared to 4.0% growth a year earlier.

The 2026 menu features two signature sandwiches, loaded fries, and seasoned McNuggets. Also included are a Stroopwafel McFlurry and a pair of dipping sauces. These items became available at participating Canadian locations starting August 18.

The format boosts basket size through different methods. Entrées encourage trial visits. Loaded fries and sauces act as add-ons, and the McFlurry is available as an additional dessert purchase.

Canada marketing head Jennifer DelVecchio said, “What started here has grown into a global phenomenon.” The company noted that the previous year’s Canadian debut indicated robust interest in international flavours. Official statement

The large size of McDonald’s enhances the benefits of reuse. As of June 30, around 95% of its 46,028 locations were operated by franchisees. Higher sales at its outlets increase revenue from rents and royalties while allowing the company to avoid direct operating expenses for each location.

Systemwide sales for the second quarter climbed 5% to $37 billion. Consolidated revenue increased 4%, reaching $7.10 billion. Adjusted earnings stood at $3.38 per share, surpassing the consensus estimate of $3.32.

Shares finished Monday at $272.54, rising 0.59%. In premarket trade on Tuesday at 04:14 EDT, the stock was at about $272.83. Since the menu started on August 18, the shares have climbed 2.1%, though they are still 20.3% beneath their 52-week peak.

The consensus price target indicates a potential 16.5% increase. However, Monday’s sector gains were larger for some competitors. Shares of Yum! Brands, Inc. advanced 2.85%, and Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. added 3.04%.

Risks: McDonald’s does not report sales figures for its Canadian promotions. Short-term demand could be driven by novelty rather than ongoing business. More complicated menu items may also hinder kitchen efficiency or impact franchisee profit margins.

Insight will emerge once the promotion finishes. If guest visits rise without the need for deeper discounts, global menu reuse could prove to be a sustainable growth strategy. If not, the heist is simply a marketing occurrence.

World Menu Heist tests a slowing international engine

Seven products from six overseas menus give McDonald’s Canada a traffic experiment built from existing ideas. The question is whether novelty can reaccelerate 1.5% international comparable-sales growth.

What investors should watch

SignalMeaning
Guest countsBest evidence that novelty adds visits.
Average checkLoaded fries, sauces and dessert may increase baskets.
Kitchen speedComplex builds can reduce throughput.
Post-promotion trafficSeparates repeat demand from launch trial.

Risk panel

Canada sales and product margins are undisclosed. Limited-time scarcity may front-load demand. More ingredients can raise waste, slow kitchens and squeeze franchisee profitability.

Investor read: a useful traffic experiment, not a standalone earnings forecast.
