Veterans Kick Off Indiana Freedom Runs Before America’s 250th

ANGOLA, Indiana, June 21, 2026, 09:02 EDT

  • Crooked Lake Freedom 5 in Angola is set for July 4. The 5-mile race kicks off at 8 a.m. EDT, with the 5K going off at 8:20 a.m. Entry fee for either race is $45.
  • Honor Flight will hold its Freedom Run at Historic Bosse Field in Evansville, southern Indiana, on July 4. The lineup includes a 5K, a one-mile walk and a kids dash.
  • The runs arrive as the U.S. prepares for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing on July 4, 2026.

Crooked Lake Freedom 5 in Angola is listed for Independence Day on Indiana’s calendar, with officials planning to connect the holiday to the 250th anniversary and salute military service. The July 4 event at Crooked Lake is set for the morning. Race organizers will discount entry for military and first responders.

July 4, 2026 is a big one for organizers. It marks 250 years since the founding of the country. They’re linking runs, walks, and stadium events to civic celebrations and fundraisers, hoping to draw in the community.

The Freedom 5 Run in Angola will honor service members, WANE said Saturday. The event is meant for those currently serving and veterans, according to the race listing. Proceeds will go toward efforts to protect Crooked Lake’s natural beauty and integrity.

The Angola event features a 5-mile race at 8 a.m. EDT, then a 5K run/walk at 8:20 a.m. EDT. Registration shuts down late July 2 and opens again the following day. Packet pickup and onsite registration run that night at the 4-H park pavilion near the course start and finish.

The race is offering a $5 discount for active and retired first responders, active-duty military, and veterans. It’s a modest cut, signaling the event is aimed more at families, people from the lake area, holiday visitors, and runners looking for something patriotic than a competitive field.

Crooked Lake in Angola is on Endurance Grid’s schedule for July 4, offering both 5K and 5-mile races. Other runs are also listed around that date, including Hamilton Lake Road Classic, also on July 4, roughly nine miles away.

Honor Flight of Southern Indiana will hold its first Freedom Run at Bosse Field July 4, WKDQ reported. The event opens at 8 a.m. Veterans in wheelchairs are invited to join, organizers said.

Bosse Field race organizers are planning a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile walk at 8 a.m. CDT, plus a kids dash at 9 a.m. CDT, the race page says. Both the start and finish are at home plate. In the dash, kids take off around the bases—organizers say it’s a different setup from a normal road race, going for a holiday feel.

Honor Flight of Southern Indiana, listed as the 133rd hub by the Honor Flight Network, covers 14 counties in the state and takes veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials tied to their service. The group says it has flown 1,480 veterans since 2014.

Turnout is still up in the air. The events compete for July 4 runners, volunteers, sponsors, and family time. A smaller group could mean less money raised and less attention for the races. Angola organizers posted that if you wait until the last minute to sign up, cash or check is the only option, so late entries might get held up.

On the ground, organizers are focusing on simplicity. For the 250th anniversary, they want events people can attend before the fireworks. Angola and Evansville are sticking to a morning run and a veterans salute, aiming for turnout on Independence Day if there’s a direct reason to show up.
