The composition of earnings shifted significantly. IES specifies three divisions catering to the data-center sector: Communications, Infrastructure Solutions, and Commercial & Industrial.

Those businesses generated a combined $918.6 million in revenue and delivered $191.3 million in segment operating income. This accounted for 74% of sales and 92% of segment profit before corporate expenses. In the same period a year ago, the respective shares were 61% and 74%.

Their total operating margin expanded to 20.8% from 17.2%. Revenue jumped 68.8%. Operating income rose by over two times. These figures explain why softness in housing had a smaller impact this quarter.

The consolidated figures showed gains as well.

GAAP earnings were supported by investment returns. IES reported a $26.2 million gain from marketable securities. Adjusted EPS increased by 71% even with investment gains and other adjustments factored out.

Chief Executive Matt Simmes stated previous capital allocation had “positioned us to grow revenue and improve margins.” IES increased its production capacity by approximately one million square feet over the last year. GlobeNewswire

Commercial & Industrial posted the biggest increase in margin. Revenue more than doubled, and operating income was four times higher. IES attributed this to an uptick in short-term data-center projects with strong margins. Residential revenue declined 6.3%, while profit fell by 51.2%.

Backlog added to the positive momentum, climbing to $4.53 billion, a 91% increase since September. Of this amount, 91.6% came from the three segments that cater to data centers.

IES supported its growth without carrying debt at the end of the quarter. The company reported $77.3 million in cash and $310.6 million in marketable securities. Operating cash flow for the nine-month period increased by 55% to $239.4 million.

Capital expenditures totaled $123.0 million for the nine months, marking a 160% increase. The company lifted its fiscal 2026 capital spending outlook to a range of $145 million to $160 million. Management anticipates that backlog and spending on capacity will drive growth through fiscal 2027.

Peer stocks saw limited or negative movement on Friday. Quanta Services, Inc. gained 2.4%, while MasTec, Inc. dropped 17.2%.

Definitions of backlog vary between companies. Price changes reflect values recorded from 1:56 to 1:57 p.m. EDT.

IES has authorised a two-for-one stock split. Investors who are on record as of August 14 will be issued extra shares following the market close on August 21. According to management, the split is expected to enhance the stock’s trading liquidity.

Risks: Of the backlog, $1.72 billion, equivalent to 38%, had not become legally enforceable. Labor supply challenges persist. The C&I segment saw results bolstered by profitable, short-term projects. A 10% shift in securities would impact pre-tax income by roughly $31.1 million.

The next challenge is converting backlog. IES anticipates an increase in working-capital requirements through the first quarter of fiscal 2027. The ability to sustain data-center margins while expanding both workforce and capacity will determine performance in the upcoming earnings period.

Further analysis

What is driving the sharp rise in IES Holdings shares today?
Shares of IES climbed 33.3% to $762 as of 1:57 p.m. ET, increasing the company’s market capitalization by about $3.84 billion. SPY advanced 0.5% and QQQ moved up 0.8%. This movement is attributed to the company’s strong fiscal third-quarter earnings and revenue results. GlobeNewswire
What was the size of the third-quarter earnings beat?
Adjusted earnings came in at $6.70 per share, topping the published estimate of $4.83 by 38.7%. Revenue totaled $1.243 billion, exceeding the $1.08 billion consensus by about 15.1%. GAAP diluted earnings stood at $7.57 per share. With sparse analyst coverage, consensus numbers are subject to greater variability. GlobeNewswire
What sectors contributed to IES Holdings' 40% increase in revenue?
The three fastest-growing segments generated $918.6 million, accounting for 74% of total revenue. Communications revenue increased by 51%, Infrastructure by 73%, and Commercial & Industrial by 109%. Gulf Island contributed $51.7 million to Infrastructure revenue following its acquisition in January. Operating margin for Commercial & Industrial surged to 22.5% from about 11.2%. Management attributed this performance to quick-turn projects with higher margins. GlobeNewswire
What level of earnings visibility does the record backlog offer?
Backlog stood at $4.525 billion, a 91% increase since September 2025. Remaining performance obligations were $2.802 billion, accounting for approximately 62% of the backlog. The balance of $1.723 billion is tied to contracts that cannot be enforced until work commences. Communications and Commercial & Industrial had $3.014 billion combined backlog. The company maintains strong visibility, but backlog figures do not ensure revenue or profit. GlobeNewswire
How does the forecast appear for the fourth quarter and the 2027 fiscal year?
IES did not provide specific numerical earnings guidance. Executives anticipate that backlog and investments in capacity will drive growth in the fourth quarter and fiscal 2027. Analysts previously estimated revenue at $1.09 billion and adjusted earnings per share at $4.91, figures that suggest sequential decreases but do not reflect Friday's significant upside surprise. Additional production capacity is projected to have a greater impact starting in fiscal 2027. GlobeNewswire
What is the level of severity of ongoing weakness in Residential?
Residential operating income decreased by 51% to $16.3 million for the quarter. Revenue was down 6% at $324.1 million, and the operating margin approached 5%. The segment continued to account for around 26% of overall company revenue. Management expects ongoing weakness within single-family housing in the short term. An improving multi-family backlog is anticipated to benefit performance in fiscal 2027. GlobeNewswire
Is IES able to support its growth plans without exposing itself to major financial risk?
IES closed June holding $387.9 million in cash and securities with zero debt. Operating cash flow over nine months jumped 55% to $239.4 million. The company allocated $123 million to capital expenditures and $143.1 million for acquisitions, and cleared all revolving-credit balances before the quarter finished. Receivables climbed by $209.5 million, highlighting collection as a key area to monitor. SEC
To what extent did investment gains boost reported earnings?
Gains from marketable securities contributed $26.2 million to third-quarter pre-tax earnings. GAAP net income stood at $153.0 million, compared with $135.3 million in adjusted income. This resulted in an after-tax gap of $17.7 million between the two figures. Underlying performance stayed robust. Operating income climbed 60%, and adjusted EBITDA grew 60% to $201.3 million. GlobeNewswire
Does IES Holdings remain fairly valued following today's surge?
IESC is priced at $762, which values the stock at about 33.9 times its trailing four-quarter GAAP earnings. Based on adjusted earnings, the figure is around 41.5 times. By comparison, EMCOR’s ratio is close to 25.4 times, and Quanta’s approaches 77.2 times. These firms’ business compositions vary. The only analyst price target disclosed is $700, placing it roughly 8% below the stock’s closing price on Friday. That target could be out of date after the company’s latest report. GlobeNewswire
How does the stock split affect things, and what risks still persist?
A two-for-one share split will double the number of shares for each investor but leaves overall value unchanged. Shareholders on record as of August 14 will receive their extra shares after August 21. Based on a $762 share price, the adjusted value post-split would be roughly $381. While this move could boost share accessibility, it does not affect underlying value. Principal risks remain labor shortages, fixed-price contracts and the unpredictability of converting the backlog. Tontine holds a 53.17% ownership stake, giving it substantial voting power. SEC
