Belgium’s €9 Million Gold Stash Matches Only 23 COMEX Contracts in Value

NEW YORK, August 14, 2026, 12:08 EDT — Gold is trading on COMEX and U.S. cash markets remain open.

  • A Belgian gold hoard valued at €9 million is equivalent to roughly 23.5 standard COMEX contracts.
  • Gold futures gained 0.55% as a softer dollar balanced concerns over rates and oil.
  • Bank projections continue to diverge significantly, ranging between $4,375 and $6,300 per ounce.

A find at a Belgian construction site, estimated to be worth around €9 million, has drawn notice. The discovery is not expected to influence the gold market. Early estimates place the hoard at approximately 2,346 troy ounces, equivalent to 23.5 standard COMEX contracts.

This represents about 0.023% out of the 101,250 contracts exchanged as of 11:29 EDT. The calculation is based on the disclosed value, an exchange rate of €1 to $1.1584, and the gold futures price of $4,444.60.

Coins, gold nuggets, and numbered bars were discovered by workers hidden within a bricked cellar wall at a disused brewery in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde. Authorities are examining the find to determine how it came to be there and who owns it. “It turned out to be a bit more than we thought,” student worker Kobe said. The Guardian

The discovery is genuine but has little effect on the market. CME Group notes that a standard gold futures contract represents 100 troy ounces, and the World Gold Council puts the total amount of gold above ground at 219,891 tonnes.

Gold prices edged higher on Friday, supported by a softer dollar. Softer inflation data and a drop in July payrolls led investors to scale back bets on further Federal Reserve rate hikes. Jim Wyckoff of American Gold Exchange described the weaker dollar as a “friendly outside market” for gold. Reuters

Such factors far outweigh the supply news from Belgium. According to the World Gold Council, gold demand reached 1,269 tonnes in the second quarter. Central banks added 288.9 tonnes, and gold-backed ETFs lost 44.8 tonnes. The newly found hoard accounts for roughly 0.006% of demand for a single quarter.

The range of forecasts carries greater significance than the gold itself. Wells Fargo linked its upward target to declining short-term rates and ongoing central bank interest. Bernstein cited real yields and anticipated only modest ETF withdrawals.

Those looking for direct access may opt for physically backed instruments like SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEARCA:GLD). Performance remains tied to bullion values, associated fees and tracking accuracy. The Belgian reserve does not impact this dynamic.

Underlying demand is robust. In June, 89% of reserve managers surveyed anticipated that global central-bank gold reserves would increase. A record-high 45% indicated plans for their own institutions to purchase gold.

Risks: Gold could come under pressure from a stronger dollar, increased real yields or a renewed outlook for rate hikes. Rising tensions in the Middle East may boost safe-haven appetite, while climbing oil prices might fuel inflation concerns and prompt central banks to tighten policy.

The gold stash is a striking tale of wealth. For investors, the key takeaway is scale. A cellar may contain great riches without impacting a worldwide market.
