Super Micro Stock’s Margin Reset Overshadows Its $68.5 Billion Sales Bet

SAN JOSE, California, August 15, 2026, 17:20 PDT — U.S. cash markets are closed for the weekend.

  • Super Micro ended Friday at $39.84 after a sharp post-earnings rally.
  • Fiscal 2027 revenue guidance beat the Wall Street consensus by about 30%.
  • Next quarter’s guided margin makes profit conversion the central test.

Super Micro Computer gave investors a $68.5 billion sales promise. Its next margin guide makes that promise harder to value.

Stock chart for NASDAQ:SMCI

At company guidance midpoints, September-quarter revenue reaches $15.0 billion. Yet indicated gross profit falls to about $1.59 billion. That is roughly $367 million below the June quarter, despite 35% more sales. The calculation uses management’s adjusted margin ranges and is an analytical estimate.

The June quarter still marked a large operating recovery. Revenue nearly doubled to $11.12 billion, while adjusted earnings reached $1.70 a share. Revenue missed the LSEG estimate of $11.55 billion. Gross margin reached 17.5% on a GAAP basis.

Management blamed the revenue shortfall on customer delays involving power, cooling and networking. Finance chief David Weigand said the margin gain reflected a better mix. Some contracts also moved into the September quarter, according to the company.

Demand is not the weak link. Super Micro recorded more than $60 billion of new orders in the June quarter. It entered fiscal 2027 with record backlog. The company cautioned in July that some orders may be cancelled or delayed.

Customer breadth improved, too. Nine clients each generated more than $1 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue. The comparable count was four a year earlier. CEO Charles Liang said the company added several hundred enterprise and other customers.

The annual guide also demands acceleration beyond September. At the midpoint, the final three quarters must average $17.83 billion. That is 18.9% above the first-quarter midpoint. The order book offers support, but delivery timing will decide the result.

Wall Street remains split. Raymond James sees more upside, while Citi and Goldman targets sit near or below Friday’s close. Their disagreement tracks the central issue: demand looks strong, but margins remain volatile.

The rally spread across AI infrastructure. Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also gained after Super Micro’s report. Their moves were smaller. Super Micro rose 13% on Wednesday, then closed Friday at $39.84.

Next week, investors will test whether the earnings rally can hold. U.S. cash trading resumes Monday at 09:30 EDT. Fresh broker estimates should reveal how much of the $68.5 billion outlook analysts accept.

Risks: Large orders can slip, shrink or disappear. Customer concentration raises quarterly volatility. Super Micro is also reviewing alleged export-control issues. Working-capital demands and a return to lower margins could offset rapid sales growth.

Further analysis

What drove the rise in Super Micro Computer shares following its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings?
Adjusted earnings rose to $1.70 per share, approximately 85% higher than the Wall Street estimate. The company projected revenue for the September quarter between $14.5 billion and $15.5 billion. For fiscal 2027, sales guidance of $65 billion to $72 billion was around 30% above the consensus at the midpoint. Revenue fell short of the June-quarter estimate, leaving the rally primarily dependent on profitability and projected demand.
What factors could cause Super Micro's gross profit to decrease in the next quarter even if its revenue grows?
Analysts’ calculations indicate adjusted gross profit of roughly $1.59 billion for fiscal Q1, versus nearly $1.96 billion in fiscal Q4. Revenue is expected to grow by around 35%, though the projected margin midpoint drops to 10.6% from 17.6%. The estimated decrease of $367 million is based on an analysis, not official guidance from the company.
What does Super Micro need to achieve to hit the midpoint of its fiscal 2027 revenue target?
Following a first-quarter midpoint of $15.0 billion, the next three quarters will need to average approximately $17.83 billion each. This figure is almost 19% higher than the midpoint for the September quarter. The company has over $60 billion in June-quarter orders and a record-setting backlog backing the goal, although certain orders may face deferrals or cancellations.
What are the key risks currently facing Super Micro investors?
Execution and sustained margins are key priorities. Major customer assignments may shift from one quarter to another, and nine customers contributed over $1 billion each in fiscal 2026 revenue. Working-capital requirements may increase due to higher volume. The current export-control review continues to create legal uncertainties. Broker price targets remain split, with the most recent changes ranging between $34 and $48.
