NEW YORK, August 12, 2026, 19:25 EDT — U.S. markets finished regular trading for the day.
- The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.54% to close at 26,588.49.
- AI-infrastructure stocks rose by an average of 11.56%.
- Four major mega-caps dropped 1.26%, resulting in a spread of 12.82 points.
The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.54% on Wednesday, though the headline gain masked a significant shift within the technology sector. Companies providing AI computing saw investor support, while some platforms purchasing AI computing faced declines. The index ended the session at 26,588.49, increasing by 143.04 points.
An equal-weighted basket highlights the contrast. CoreWeave NASDAQ:CRWV, Super Micro Computer NASDAQ:SMCI, Nvidia NASDAQ:NVDA and Micron Technology NASDAQ:MU posted an average gain of 11.56%. Meanwhile, Microsoft NASDAQ:MSFT, Amazon NASDAQ:AMZN, Apple NASDAQ:AAPL and Alphabet NASDAQ:GOOGL saw an average decline of 1.26%. The difference stood at 12.82 percentage points.
This is significant since the Nasdaq is still weighted by market capitalization. Nvidia’s 3.03% gain helped balance losses among some trillion-dollar counterparts. The index moved higher, while investors distinguished between AI providers and major clients incurring larger expenses.

CoreWeave surged 19.28% to reach $107.73. Super Micro advanced 19.02% to $37.61. Nvidia was up 3.03%, and Micron moved higher by 4.92%. The PHLX semiconductor index increased around 2.5%.
| Equal-weight group | Constituents | Average move |
|---|---|---|
| AI infrastructure | CRWV, SMCI, NVDA, MU | up 11.56% |
| Mega-cap platforms | MSFT, AMZN, AAPL, GOOGL | down 1.26% |
| Performance spread | Infrastructure minus platforms | 12.82 points higher |
Quarterly earnings confirmed the strength of the infrastructure sector. CoreWeave’s backlog climbed to $104.2 billion from $99.4 billion the previous quarter, not including over $25 billion in commitments secured at the start of this quarter. Super Micro projected fiscal 2027 revenue ahead of analysts’ expectations.
Prices seem more robust. Analysts at MoffettNathanson noted that “project returns are strengthening, even if unit costs are going up too.” CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator said the company’s available capacity for the near term was essentially sold out, providing suppliers with rare leverage in negotiations.
The buyers had another narrative. Microsoft dropped 2.26% to $492.43, while Amazon declined 1.83% to $267.28. Apple eased 0.87%, and Alphabet dipped 0.08%. Investors showed a preference for clear compute demand, rather than the platforms providing funding.
| Company | Analyst | Call | Target | Implied move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | Goldman Sachs | Buy, reaffirmed Aug. 12 | $285 | +27.2% |
| CoreWeave | Northland Securities | Buy, reaffirmed Aug. 12 | $165 | +53.2% |
| CoreWeave | Bernstein | Sell, kept Aug. 11 | $74 | -31.3% |
| Super Micro | Rosenblatt Securities | Buy, kept Aug. 12 | $51 | +35.6% |
| Super Micro | Bank of America | Sell, reaffirmed Aug. 12 | $33 | -12.3% |
Analysts are split even after Wednesday’s rally. Price targets for CoreWeave varied between $74 and $176. The average target for Super Micro was just 5.64% above the closing price. Forecasts indicate belief in demand, but less consensus over stable margins.
Inflation provided an additional boost. U.S. consumer prices edged up 0.1% in July and registered a 3.4% gain compared to a year ago. Core prices ticked 0.2% higher on the month and 2.5% over the year. Energy prices declined by 1.5%.
After the release, Treasury yields pulled back. Traders saw a 62% probability that the Federal Reserve would maintain current rates in September. The Cboe Volatility Index dropped to 14.45, hitting its lowest point since January.
| Market signal | August 12 reading | Investor meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq 52-week high | 27,190.21 | Index finished 2.21% under that mark |
| Nasdaq new highs / lows | 123 / 95 | Upward bias, but not dominant |
| Advancers versus decliners | 1.7 to 1 | Market gains widely shared |
| U.S. share volume | 15.5 billion | Lower than 20-day mean of 17.5 billion |
The index remained 2.21% under its 52-week peak. On Nasdaq, there were 123 new highs and 95 new lows. Trading volumes fell 11.4% short of the 20-day moving average. The session’s tone was positive rather than exuberant.
Risks: Building AI infrastructure requires substantial investment and a stable power supply. CoreWeave forecasts capital expenditures of $35 billion to $39 billion in 2026. High reliance on key customers, financing expenses and export restrictions could diminish the premium seen on Wednesday.
The July producer price report is due before markets open on Thursday. A stronger figure could rekindle worries over interest rates. For Nasdaq, the key question is if AI suppliers can turn limited capacity into revenue while keeping balance sheets solid.
