ICHEON, South Korea, August 17, 2026, 21:00 KST — Trading in Seoul has ended, while U.S. cash markets start trading at 09:30 EDT.
- SK hynix ADSs climbed 3.9% before the market open to $172.88.
- At present exchange rates, the equivalent stake in Seoul was valued at approximately $116.53.
- The initial U.S. access premium thus stood at 48.4%.
SK hynix Inc. NASDAQ:SKHY climbed 3.9% in premarket U.S. trading on Monday. However, this advance pushed the premium on its American depositary shares to about 48%. The size of that premium is now as significant as the chipmaker’s low price-to-earnings ratio.
One SKHY depositary share equates to one-tenth of a common share listed in Seoul KRX:000660. The most recent closing price in Korea was 1.645 million won. Using an exchange rate of 1,411.69 won to the dollar, this values the holding at $116.53.
| Price bridge | Value | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Korean common share | ₩1,645,000 | Most recent close in Seoul |
| Underlying value per ADS | ₩164,500 | Equal to one-tenth of a common share |
| Dollar parity value | $116.53 | Based on ₩1,411.69 per US dollar |
| SKHY premarket price | $172.88 | Recorded at 07:50 EDT |
| Preliminary ADS premium | 48.4% | $172.88 against $116.53 |
| Decline if premium vanished | 32.6% | $172.88 falls to parity |
The comparison remains preliminary as Seoul markets had already shut. Both the won and Korean equities may fluctuate before the close of U.S. trading. Nonetheless, the premium was just 4.8% at the $149 offering price. Reuters calculated the figure at close to 36% soon after trading started.
The shortage is structural. SK hynix issued 177.9 million ADSs, but these corresponded to just 17.79 million newly issued common shares. Additional receipts are restricted by Korean regulatory and reporting requirements, which curtail arbitrage opportunities.
Memory stocks gained further momentum on Monday. SKHY lagged behind Sandisk Corporation NASDAQ:SNDK yet performed better than Micron Technology NASDAQ:MU. The sector had already received a boost the previous week from an optimistic product outlook.
| U.S.-listed memory company | Friday finish | Monday pre-market | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandisk NASDAQ:SNDK | $1,641.11 | $1,715.00 | +4.50% |
| SK hynix NASDAQ:SKHY | $166.33 | $172.88 | +3.94% |
| Micron NASDAQ:MU | $971.66 | $1,003.91 | +3.32% |
SKHY continues to trade at a low level based on its earnings. Initial analyst consensus forecasts 448,740 won in 2027 earnings for each Korean share, which translates to roughly $31.79 per ADS using prevailing exchange rates.
| Valuation view | Price | Preliminary 2027 EPS | Forward P/E |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq ADS | $172.88 | $31.79 per ADS | 5.4 times |
| Seoul common share | ₩1,645,000 | ₩448,740 per share | 3.7 times |
| Nasdaq ADS parity | $116.53 | $31.79 per ADS | 3.7 times |
The gap alters the investment outlook. While the company remains inexpensive across both markets, U.S. investors pay roughly 1.5 times more than parity. Earnings growth needs to offset the access premium first.
| Broker | Recommendation | ADS target | Upside from $172.88 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UBS | Buy | $204 | 18% |
| Barclays | Overweight | $300 | 74% |
| Rosenblatt Securities | Buy-equivalent | $320 | 85% |
| Six-analyst consensus | Buy | $246.72 | 43% |
Analysts are forecasting robust memory prices. UBS projects DRAM bit demand growth to hit 36% in 2027. Barclays likewise expects demand to surpass supply.
| Preliminary Q2 result | Q2 2026 | Q1 2026 | Quarterly change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₩79.32 trillion | ₩52.58 trillion | up 51% |
| Operating profit | ₩60.54 trillion | ₩37.61 trillion | up 61% |
| Operating margin | 76% | 72% | increase of 4 percentage points |
| Cash and equivalents | ₩88.0 trillion | ₩54.4 trillion | rise of ₩33.6 trillion |
Operating figures underscore the upbeat outlook. Park Seong-hwan, head of investor relations at SK hynix, reported DRAM selling prices climbed around 30% quarter-over-quarter. NAND prices advanced by a percentage in the mid-50s range.
Labour costs contribute to unpredictability. Roughly 2,500 Korean employees established a single union last week following deadlocked wage negotiations. The workers seek increased leverage in talks after the company reported record earnings.
Risks: The ADS premium may decrease despite earnings growth. Memory pricing stays cyclical, and factors such as export restrictions, significant capital investment, and wage conflicts can weigh on returns.
SK hynix’s earnings prospects remain robust. The bigger issue is if U.S. access justifies a $56 premium per ADS.
