MUSCAT, August 17, 2026, 16:10 GST — U.S. cash markets will open at 09:30 EDT, with both oil futures and U.S. equity premarket trades showing strong activity.
- Oman has put its official spill estimate at 400 square kilometres, while external assessments go up to 2,000.
- The stranded tanker was loaded with approximately 800,000 barrels, with an estimated value of around $72 million based on Brent prices from Monday.
- No significant export disruptions have been noted, distinguishing the risk of cleanup from concerns over supply.
The oil spill off Oman represents a significant environmental burden but has not disrupted crude supply on a large scale so far. Salvage efforts for the Caroline Bezengi remain stalled due to monsoon conditions and hazardous rocky shallows. The stranded tanker was transporting roughly 800,000 barrels of Russian crude.
With Brent priced at $89.44 on Monday, the entire cargo is valued near $71.6 million. This amount represents just 5.7% of the 14 million barrels transacted in a recent ADNOC spot tender. The risk associated with the individual barrels remains limited compared to broader shipping disruptions.
The spill area remains a difficult figure to pin down. Oman put the estimate at 400 square kilometres on August 10, while alternate assessments go as high as 2,000, a fivefold difference. Oil has made landfall near Ras Madrakah following its encirclement of a protected marine site.
| Spill measure | Verified figure | Investor relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Tanker cargo | About 800,000 barrels | Approximately $71.6 million at $89.44 Brent |
| Official affected area | 400 sq km | Most recent official estimate, as of Aug. 10 |
| High outside estimate | 2,000 sq km | Five times above the official number |
| Grounding date | June 30 | Lengthy exposure to monsoon sea conditions |
| Vessel age | Built in 2001 | Older shadow-fleet ship |
| Insurance position | No Western cover | Recovery and cleanup funding more difficult to determine |
Oman’s director general of maritime affairs, Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Rawahi, stated that the situation posed “operational and navigational risks.” The vessel has flooding on one side. Its hull continues to face difficult seasonal sea conditions. Reuters
Brent increased by $0.92, or 1.04%, to reach $89.44 as of 10:02 GMT. West Texas Intermediate advanced 0.67% to $82.95. Reuters cited stalled diplomatic efforts with Iran and limited shipping through the Hormuz Strait, not the Oman spill, as the main drivers.
The difference can be seen in stocks. Shares of Exxon Mobil Corporation NYSE:XOM, Chevron Corporation NYSE:CVX and Occidental Petroleum Corporation NYSE:OXY all climbed on Friday. On Monday, their premarket action was flat to lower despite gains in Brent.
| Asset | Latest verified level | Session move | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brent crude | $89.44 | Up 1.04% Monday | Hormuz premium continues |
| WTI crude | $82.95 | Up 0.67% Monday | Brent advances outpace WTI |
| Exxon Mobil NYSE:XOM | $158.80 premarket | Down 0.81% | Last closed at $160.10 on Friday |
| Chevron NYSE:CVX | $199.75 premarket | Down 0.12% | Last closed at $200.00 on Friday |
| Occidental NYSE:OXY | $58.36 premarket | No change | Friday closing price was $58.36 |
The pricing remains primarily influenced by the larger chokepoint. On Saturday, just five commodity vessels passed through Hormuz, and no transits were registered on Sunday. By comparison, 31 vessels were counted the weekend before. This marks an 84% decrease ahead of Sunday’s absence of crossings.
According to SEB Research analyst Bjarne Schieldrop, oil prices are not expected to climb significantly unless there is a stop to residual crude shipments through Hormuz or the Bab el-Mandeb is closed. This marks a more precise level for the market than simply broader spread of the spill.
| Company | Recent consensus | Average target | Implied move | Latest listed action |

| Exxon Mobil NYSE:XOM | 8 analysts recommend Buy, 9 Hold, none suggest Sell | $166.35 | +3.9% | Barclays kept Buy, $177 |
| Chevron NYSE:CVX | 13 Buy ratings, 4 Hold ratings, no Sell ratings | $216.00 | +8.0% | Barclays kept Hold, $208 |

The recommendations are based on factors such as oil sensitivity, company balance sheets, and assets. They do not assess spill liability. Caroline Bezengi does not have Western insurance and is independent of these producers.
Risks: A hull breach might spill additional cargo, increasing cleanup expenses. In contrast, a Hormuz shutdown would have a reverse market impact by restricting regional exports and sending crude prices sharply upward. Rapid salvage efforts or diplomatic developments could lower both premiums.
At present, the spill serves as a warning about the shadow fleet. The primary risk for prices continues to be Hormuz.
