Baidu, Inc. fell 12.6% on Tuesday, pressured by disappointing second-quarter results. ADSs changed hands at $91.01 at 15:33 EDT, close to the day’s low. Trading volume totaled 13.7 million, approximately 5.8 times the average daily volume over the last three months.

The more significant indicator for investors is found in the composition of revenue. Businesses driven by AI now account for half of Baidu General Business revenue. However, this segment declined by 8% compared to the previous quarter. While the growth driver remains substantial, there was no increase in momentum.

Online marketing revenue dropped by 19% to RMB13.1 billion. Reuters attributed the drop to subdued advertising demand as a result of China’s property downturn and weak consumer spending. Revenue from iQIYI declined 5% to RMB6.3 billion.

AI Cloud Infra posted a 50% increase compared to a year ago. GPU Cloud revenue jumped 283%. Despite those gains, cloud revenue decreased 17% quarter-on-quarter. The drop from the first quarter contributed to the market reaction.

Chief Executive Robin Li stated that strong AI growth underscores Baidu’s transformation from an internet company to one focused on AI. Li also noted ongoing challenges in online marketing. Chief Financial Officer Haijian He reported positive operating cash flow for a fourth consecutive quarter, totalling RMB3.4 billion.

The decline was limited to certain companies. Alibaba Group Holding climbed 2.9%, JD.com was up 0.8%, and PDD Holdings increased 0.5% at the same time.

Wall Street approached the report with a broad range of forecasts. The disparity underscores division over whether growth in cloud and autonomous driving can offset declines in search advertising. The following targets were issued before Tuesday’s earnings announcement.

In July, the recommendation breakdown stood at 23 Strong Buy ratings, six Buy, four Hold, and one Sell. Elsewhere, JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Barclays reduced their targets prior to the report.

Baidu holds RMB283.1 billion in cash and investments. Apollo Go operates in 28 cities, having completed over 240 million fully driverless kilometers. These assets keep strategic options open, but they do not address the immediate revenue shortfall.

Risks: A quicker rebound in advertising or another surge in AI Cloud growth may trigger a rebound in shares. Ongoing softness in ads, increased AI expenditure, regulatory changes in China, or tighter U.S.-China restrictions could weigh on revenue, margins and valuation.

The upcoming test is straightforward. Investors are looking for AI-driven growth to pick up again quarter-on-quarter, with legacy revenue holding steady. This quarter, scale by itself did not suffice.
