Tempus AI soars 40% in a week, adding $3.7 billion—over double the Personalis acquisition amount

CHICAGO, August 23, 2026, 09:36 CDT Tempus AI (TEM) jumped 40% this week, lifting its market value by $3.7 billion, which is more than two times what the company spent on acquiring Personalis (PSNL).

  • Tempus AI ended Friday at $72.69, up 39.5% for the week.
  • The surge increased market value by about $3.7 billion.
  • The increase is about 2.5 times greater than the proposed value of the Personalis transaction.
  • The average analyst price target stands at $62.64, representing a 13.8% decline from Friday’s closing price.

Tempus AI, Inc. gained roughly $3.7 billion in market capitalization last week. Encouraging Phase 3 cancer vaccine data boosted confidence in its proposed acquisition of Personalis.

Stock chart for NASDAQ:TEM

The share price increased from $52.10 on August 14 to $72.69 on Friday, marking a 39.5% gain for the week. On Friday, shares advanced 9.1% with trading volume at 15.9 million.

Valuation is now the main question for investors. Over the week, the market valued the target acquisition at almost two and a half times its enterprise value. This indicates that investors were factoring in wider oncology platform gains, beyond a single deal.

Momentum was driven by Moderna, Inc. and Merck & Co., Inc. , whose INTerpath-001 trial achieved its primary endpoint in Phase 3 for resected melanoma. Moderna described it as the first combination therapy to demonstrate a clinically meaningful benefit over pembrolizumab on its own. The preliminary announcement did not specify key efficacy data.

Personalis, Inc. provides genomic sequencing services tailored for personalized treatment programs. In July, Tempus reached an agreement to acquire Personalis at $16.25 per share. The enterprise value disclosed was $1.5 billion.

Tempus joined the rally as operations strengthened. Revenue in the second quarter climbed 22% to $382.5 million. Adjusted EBITDA was $8.0 million, compared with a loss of $5.6 million in the prior year period.

Chief Executive Eric Lefkofsky said investment in AI fueled robust expansion in oncology diagnostics and data licensing. The company secured nearly $200 million in new Data and Applications licenses over the quarter.

The valuation offers minimal tolerance for underperformance. Tempus is trading at 9.16 times its trailing sales. Its enterprise value is roughly 8.6 times the midpoint of projected 2026 revenue.

Wall Street remains divided despite the prevailing Buy consensus. BTIG increased its price target to $80 on Thursday. However, the average target among 16 analysts stands at $62.64, suggesting a 13.8% drop from Friday’s closing price.

The rise was accompanied by insider sales. On August 18, Lefkofsky, Ryan Fukushima and Andrew Polovin made three transactions with a combined value of approximately $10.2 million. These disclosures were filed before the most pronounced part of the price movement.

Risks: Tempus’s revenue impact remains unquantified after the Phase 3 outcome. Personalis is still awaiting regulatory and shareholder consent. Elevated sales multiples, ongoing negative free cash flow, and significant short interest heighten the risk of a reversal.

U.S. markets will not trade on Sunday. Looking ahead to next week, investors are expected to monitor analyst target updates and comprehensive trial release details. A new Personalis proxy or regulatory submission may also alter the transaction calculations.

MARKET CALENDAR

Key Events Today

The catalysts most likely to move markets.

#1

U.S. index futures reopen at 18:00 ET

This is the clearest scheduled U.S.-market price-discovery point today and can transmit weekend news into equity-index futures before Monday's cash session.

#2

New Zealand retail sales at 18:45 ET

The Q2 retail package can move NZD and regional risk sentiment. Spillover to U.S. assets is usually secondary unless the result is unusually large.

#3

No scheduled domestic U.S. data or corporate reports

The absence of U.S. releases, earnings, IPO pricings and split events leaves fewer scheduled catalysts, increasing the relative importance of weekend headlines and positioning at the futures reopen.
