MARA Stock Lags Behind Bitcoin’s 24% Rally Even as Treasury Adds $705 Million

MIAMI, August 23, 2026, 10:02 EDT

  • MARA rose 22.4% over the past week, compared with a 24.4% increase for bitcoin.
  • The value of MARA’s 35,577 bitcoin treasury increased by roughly $705 million from June 30, following bitcoin’s close on Friday.
  • Analyst price targets vary widely from $6 to $30, highlighting significant differences in opinion regarding the value of bitcoin and AI infrastructure.

MARA Holdings, Inc. gained 22.4% over the past week, but still lagged behind bitcoin, which climbed 24.4%. This divergence is rare for the miner, which is frequently seen as a leveraged play on cryptocurrency. As a result, MARA’s capital structure, as well as bitcoin, becomes the main focus in Monday’s session.

The stock finished Friday at $11.26, rising 0.99% for the session. Bitcoin advanced 7.3% to reach $78,335.18. MARA consequently took limited advantage of the latest Friday crypto upswing, following a 15.5% jump on Thursday.

Volume was strong, with roughly 98.9 million MARA shares traded on Friday, exceeding double the stock’s three-month average. The broader cryptocurrency shift came after Treasury bond buyback actions and mounting calls for US digital-asset regulation.

FxPro chief market analyst Alex Kuptsikevich attributed the surge to “a wave of short-covering.” This accounts for the rapid pace, though it leaves the discussion on MARA’s valuation unresolved.

MARA’s bitcoin holdings totaled 35,577 as of June 30. Valuing those coins using Friday’s closing price yields an estimated worth of $2.79 billion. This represents an increase of about $705 million over the quarter-end figure, not accounting for any subsequent sales, loans, or collateral shifts since June.

The balance sheet presents exposure to financing risk. Following the quarter’s close, MARA secured an additional $600 million in bitcoin-backed loans, with a weighted interest rate of 7.56%. Based on this rate, annual interest expenses would be roughly $45.4 million before accounting for fees.

Mining margins continue to face pressure. Revenue for Q2 declined by 27%, despite a 22% rise in energized hashrate. The cost of purchased energy per bitcoin climbed 14.7% as network difficulty increased faster than MARA’s hashrate.

The shift toward AI infrastructure provides an alternative path for valuation. MARA reported ongoing lease negotiations at multiple locations. Executives reiterated confidence in securing at least one lease by year-end. The Long Ridge acquisition is still subject to regulatory clearance.

Wall Street’s expectations for that shift vary widely. Analysts’ average price target stands at $17.99, yet projections range from $6 to $30—a gap broader than MARA’s full share price on Friday.

U.S. markets resume trading on Monday following a week where major indexes closed lower. For MARA, sustaining Friday’s positive move in bitcoin is key in the near term. Investors now await the announcement of a signed AI tenant, as further increases in powered-land capacity alone are not the next critical milestone.

Risks: Bitcoin may decline sharply, which would lower mining profit margins and collateral coverage ratios. Delays in leases, regulatory signoffs, higher electricity expenses or the need for further financing could also diminish equity yields.

Investor read

The bitcoin treasury gained about $705 million in mark-to-market value, yet the shares still trailed bitcoin. The market is rewarding the rebound while withholding a full AI-infrastructure premium until MARA converts powered land into contracted revenue.

MARKET CALENDAR

Key Events Today

The catalysts most likely to move markets.

#1

U.S. index futures reopen at 18:00 ET

This is the clearest scheduled U.S.-market price-discovery point today and can transmit weekend news into equity-index futures before Monday's cash session.

#2

New Zealand retail sales at 18:45 ET

The Q2 retail package can move NZD and regional risk sentiment. Spillover to U.S. assets is usually secondary unless the result is unusually large.

#3

No scheduled domestic U.S. data or corporate reports

The absence of U.S. releases, earnings, IPO pricings and split events leaves fewer scheduled catalysts, increasing the relative importance of weekend headlines and positioning at the futures reopen.
