MIAMI, August 21, 2026, 10:28 EDT — Trading continued on U.S. equity markets.
- MARA increased by 19.4% compared to Wednesday’s close, while Bitcoin advanced 11.3%.
- The gain increased MARA’s market capitalisation by about $722 million.
- This was 2.6 times higher than the projected increase for its June Bitcoin holdings.
MARA Holdings, Inc. NASDAQ:MARA was up 3.3% at $11.52 as of 10:28 EDT on Friday. The stock’s rally over two sessions amounted to a 19.4% increase, contributing an estimated $722 million to its market capitalization. Trading volume stood at 35.9 million shares during the first hour.
Bitcoin climbed 11.3% during the period, trading around $77,094. In comparison, MARA returned about 1.7 times more than the cryptocurrency. The difference indicates investors were also valuing the company’s power and data-center offering.
| Asset | Aug. 19 close | Aug. 21 at 10:28 EDT | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| MARA Holdings NASDAQ:MARA | $9.65 | $11.52 | up 19.4% |
| Bitcoin | $69,266 | $77,094 | up 11.3% |
| Cipher Digital NASDAQ:CIFR | $15.89 | $16.25 | up 2.3% |
| IREN Limited NASDAQ:IREN | $42.84 | $42.30 | down 1.3% |
| TeraWulf NASDAQ:WULF | $15.50 | $16.52 | up 6.6% |
The difference in valuation stands out. MARA disclosed holdings of 35,577 Bitcoin as of June 30. Using the two-day price change in Bitcoin on that amount results in an initial mark-to-market gain of $279 million.
| Two-session value bridge | Estimate | Method |
|---|---|---|
| MARA market-value increase | $722 million | Share price movement × estimated outstanding shares |
| Profit from June Bitcoin holding | $279 million | 35,577 BTC × $7,827 price change |
| Premium over Bitcoin value | $443 million | Total equity gain minus Bitcoin holding |
| Equity gain compared to Bitcoin holding | 2.6× | $722 million / $279 million |
The estimate provides a directional indication, as MARA’s Bitcoin balance could have shifted since June. Nevertheless, it highlights how the ongoing rally stands apart from a standard treasury trade. The market increase outpaced the gains from the reported cryptocurrency holdings.
MARA’s second-quarter results further illustrate the leverage. Revenue declined 27% to $174.9 million as energized hashrate increased 22% to 70.3 EH/s. A drop in Bitcoin prices contributed to a $343 million fair-value loss on digital assets.
| Q2 operating measure | Q2 2026 | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $174.9 million | down 27% |
| Net income (loss) | ($611.3 million) | compared with profit of $808.2 million |
| Energized hashrate | 70.3 EH/s | up 22% |
| Bitcoin produced | 2,422 | increased 3% |
| Purchased energy cost per Bitcoin | $38,690 | rose 15% |
| Bitcoin held | 35,577 | fell 29% |
The treasury is increasingly serving as a financing mechanism. After the quarter ended, MARA secured $600 million in Bitcoin-backed facilities. According to management, this arrangement finances the Long Ridge acquisition without issuing new equity.
The second component is power. MARA holds rights to a Texas location offering up to 2 GW of capacity. Long Ridge would contribute a 505-megawatt Ohio facility along with contracted cash flow.
Management anticipates finalising at least one high-performance computing lease deal prior to the end of the year. In its shareholder letter, the company stated: “Bitcoin mining was never the destination. It was the foundation.”
| Analyst | Firm | Rating | Target | Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gautam Chhugani | Bernstein | Hold | $17 | Aug. 13 |
| Stephen Byrd | Morgan Stanley | Sell | $6 | Aug. 13 |
| Brian Dobson | Clear Street | Hold | $10 | Aug. 12 |
| Gregory Lewis | BTIG | Buy | $27 | Aug. 11 |
| Brett Knoblauch | Cantor Fitzgerald | Buy | $12 | Aug. 7 |
Analysts are split in their views. The consensus among 13 analysts rates the stock a Buy, with an average price target of $17.99. However, individual targets vary widely, from $6 to $30. The broad range indicates contrasting expectations regarding future tenants and exposure to Bitcoin.
Morgan Stanley lifted its price target to $6 last week but maintained its Underweight rating. The bank’s model gives just a 15% probability for MARA to energize its 2,044 MW pipeline in the base case. Rosenblatt reiterated its Buy recommendation and kept a $15 target, valuing the company’s available capacity below industry peers.
Risks: Bitcoin may decline rapidly, reducing both mining income and collateral worth. Power ventures encounter approval challenges, building expenses and potential tenant issues. Falling short of lease targets could leave the premium on recent infrastructure at risk.
The following hurdle is commercial validation. MARA’s surge factors in more than just a rebound in Bitcoin. A signed lease is necessary for investors to prevent the additional $443 million from disappearing.
