Options activity tied to Nvidia earnings puts $316 billion at stake ahead of Q2 report

SANTA CLARA, California, August 21, 2026, 09:46 EDT — U.S. markets begin trading.

  • Options suggest a post-earnings swing of 6%, which corresponds to roughly $316 billion in market capitalization.
  • Wall Street’s revenue projections are only 1.3% higher than Nvidia’s midpoint guidance.
  • Data-center revenue could contribute over 93% of total sales for the quarter.

NVIDIA Corporation is set for a potential $316 billion shift in market value next week. Options data indicates shares could move 6% following Wednesday’s earnings report, according to Investopedia. Such a price swing outpaces the full market capitalisation of the majority of S&P 500 companies.

The income statement challenge appears less severe. Analysts project revenue of $92.16 billion, just $1.16 billion higher than Nvidia’s stated midpoint guidance of $91 billion.

Nvidia is set to announce its fiscal second-quarter earnings on August 26. The stock has climbed roughly 16% in 2024 but is still trading around 8% under its peak from May, according to Investopedia. Shares declined following each of the last four quarterly earnings releases.

That background makes guidance quality the key focus. Even results close to expectations might not satisfy. Investors are set to scrutinise upcoming revenue forecasts, China-related business, and how quickly Blackwell demand is ramping up.

Data-center revenue is projected at $85.67 billion, accounting for nearly 93% of overall sales. This outcome allows minimal tolerance for softness in hyperscaler demand.

Nvidia’s second-quarter forecast excludes data-center compute revenue from China. The company’s guidance is between $89.18 billion and $92.82 billion, with consensus estimates close to the upper end of that range.

Capital supply is now another factor influencing earnings. Nvidia and its partners revealed financing initiatives this month aimed at raising over $500 billion for AI infrastructure. Chief Executive Jensen Huang said, “In AI, compute is revenue.” Nvidia announcement

The wider chip sector declined ahead of the report. According to Reuters, the Philadelphia semiconductor index has fallen roughly 5% this week as bond yields increased. “The market is so reliant on the AI trade today,” said Erik Kratz of Arena Private Wealth. Reuters

Analysts continue to show consistent optimism. According to Google Finance, all 26 ratings in the past three months have been buys, with no holds or sells. The consensus price target stands at $301.82, representing a premium of roughly 39% to Friday’s early trading level.

The gap between analyst targets and the options range stands out. Notably, the lowest target of $250 is above the options’ implied top of $230.47. However, while targets reflect a 12-month horizon, options account only for the near-term event.

Risks: Shares could come under pressure from a more cautious forecast, postponed data-center projects or softer demand from China. Financing guarantees could also transfer additional infrastructure risk to Nvidia’s balance sheet. A significant beat might rapidly unwind short-term hedges.

The key metrics are limited. Nvidia has to surpass the upper limit of its previous guidance, keep margins near 75% and demonstrate that its capital investments are translating into revenue. Falling short on any of these could justify a $316 billion move.
