Bitcoin’s Price Surge Lifts Strategy’s Paper Profit While Dilution Mounts

TYSONS CORNER, Virginia, August 24, 2026, 09:40 EDT – Bitcoin’s latest rally has restored this strategy’s unrealized gains, although the impact of dilution continues to increase.

  • At 09:37 EDT, Bitcoin was valued at $78,933.88, marking a 4.7% increase over Strategy’s average acquisition price.
  • Strategy sold approximately $2.01 billion in common shares during the past week, while it did not purchase any bitcoin.
  • The sale of 18.26 million shares represents about 4.8% of Strategy’s most recently disclosed total number of shares.
  • MSTR rose 22.1% across five sessions, closely tracking bitcoin’s 23%-25% advance.

Bitcoin’s rapid surge has generated a provisional $2.98 billion gross paper profit for Strategy’s holdings. However, the stock’s typical correlation to bitcoin has diminished.

Stock chart for NASDAQ:MSTR

At 09:37 EDT on Monday, Bitcoin changed hands at $78,933.88, putting the value of Strategy Inc.’s NASDAQ: MSTR 840,447-Bitcoin holding near $66.34 billion. The firm’s total acquisition cost stood at roughly $63.36 billion.

Dilution is the key factor. Strategy offloaded 18.26 million MSTR shares, raising about $2.01 billion between August 17 and August 23. The company did not make any bitcoin purchases in that timeframe.

This detail is significant. Strategy declares its main objective as “increasing Bitcoin Per Share for our common shareholders.” Issuing new shares without increasing coin holdings has the opposite effect on that figure, at least at first. Strategy

A sample calculation demonstrates the impact. The additional shares represent approximately 4.8% of the most recent reported total of 384.23 million. If holdings remain the same, the gross bitcoin per share decreases by about the same percentage.

The funds are not sitting unused economically. Strategy boosted its USD Reserve by $300 million, establishing a $1.59 billion liquidity account. This gives the firm purchasing power should bitcoin’s price decline, and backs the company’s multi-tiered preferred-stock system.

Nonetheless, investors continued to seek bitcoin exposure in the past week. MSTR climbed 22.1% between Monday’s close and Friday. During a comparable period, bitcoin increased by approximately 23%-25%. As a result, the strategy tracked the asset rather than amplifying its performance.

Bitcoin’s rise was largely fuelled by macro liquidity. The dollar hovered close to its lowest levels in several months as the Treasury increased long-dated bond buybacks to $4 billion per round. Persistent debt fears also boosted appetite for alternative assets.

Naeem Aslam at Zaye Capital Markets cited expectations of looser liquidity, diminished regulatory threats and short covering as drivers behind the rally. He noted that maintaining a level above $77,000 would be key for sustaining momentum.

Strategy shares were quoted at $121.83 at 09:26 EDT, rising 2.2% ahead of the cash session open. Trading volume on Friday exceeded double the 65-day average. Investor interest is elevated.

The analyst forecasts vary significantly, stretching from $125 to $540 in the latest Google Finance listings. This range highlights divergent views on bitcoin, financing expenses, and the worth of Strategy’s capital-markets platform.

Risks: Bitcoin may rapidly eliminate a 4.7% cost-basis buffer. Additional equity offerings might result in dilution for existing holders. Conversely, a softer dollar or looser liquidity conditions could fuel the rally and support gains in both assets.

The next key event is deployment. Nvidia’s results, U.S. inflation readings and ETF flows could influence liquidity forecasts this week. For MSTR holders, the crucial indicator is if the new capital translates to more bitcoin per share.

Bitcoin is profitable again. MSTR dilution is the catch.

Bitcoin's five-day surge put Strategy's treasury about $3.0 billion above cost. The company sold $2.01 billion of MSTR shares last week and added no coins, reducing the immediate bitcoin-per-share leverage.

Why bitcoin and MSTR moved

Liquidity helped

A weaker dollar and larger Treasury buybacks pushed investors toward alternative assets. Short covering amplified the bitcoin move.

Cash optionality rose

Strategy built a $5.1B USD Reserve and a separate $1.59B cash pool. That supports obligations and future purchases.

Leverage paused

The company issued common equity but bought no bitcoin. Near-term BTC per share fell on an illustrative basis.

Risks: A 4.7% bitcoin cost-basis cushion can disappear quickly. More equity sales can dilute holders. A continued liquidity rally could instead lift both BTC and MSTR. Gross bitcoin value does not deduct debt, preferred stock, taxes or other claims.
