Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) fell 3.39% on Wednesday after a cyber incident halted worldwide order processing and shipments. Shares dropped $1.69 to $48.17, wiping out about $2.49 billion in market value, calculated with the medical-device maker’s current diluted shares outstanding.
The market response exceeded the short-term sales outlook of one analyst. Evercore ISI projected a third-quarter revenue growth hit of 600 to 700 basis points, according to Investor’s Business Daily. Based on Boston Scientific’s sales guidance midpoint of $5.27 billion, this amounts to approximately $316 million to $369 million.
Boston Scientific identified the incident on August 25 and reported it the following day. According to its regulatory filing, the attack resulted in “disruptions and limitations” to systems involved in processing and shipping customer orders. The company has yet to assess whether the incident will have a material effect on its finances.
Unusual investor interest was evident in trading activity, with volume rising to 36.56 million shares, well above the three-month average of 21.11 million. Shares changed hands in a range from $46.90 to $48.54, finishing close to the session’s high.
| Investor measure | Verified baseline | Incident or scenario | Read-through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quoted equity value | 1.4748 billion diluted shares | $1.69 drop in share price | Roughly $2.49 billion wiped out |
| Q3 2026 revenue | $5.27 billion midpoint forecast | Evercore: 600–700 basis-point negative impact on growth | Scenario puts roughly $316–$369 million of sales in jeopardy |
| Market reaction versus scenario | $2.49 billion value wiped out | $316–$369 million at risk in sales | Market loss is 6.8–7.9 times the sales effect |
| Trading activity | 21.11 million typical volume | 36.56 million shares changed hands | 1.73 times more than average |
The calculation does not predict the ultimate loss. Instead, it indicates the level of disruption investors have factored into the stock price so far. The multiple further captures doubts about profit margins, customer service, and the expected timeline for recovery.
The timing is significant as Boston Scientific started the quarter with clear growth targets. The company’s management projected third-quarter sales growth between 3% and 5%. This forecast suggests revenue of $5.22 billion to $5.32 billion from the comparable period a year earlier.
The company stated in July that sales for the second quarter increased by 7.5% to $5.44 billion. Of that, cardiovascular sales accounted for $3.62 billion, making up two-thirds of the overall figure. MedSurg reported $1.82 billion in sales.
The revenue stream depends on hospitals obtaining devices as procedures are booked. Sales may be postponed if shipments are delayed, even if underlying demand stays steady. Extended disruptions can also increase freight, remediation and customer-support expenses.
Evercore analyst Vijay Kumar likened the incident to a March cyberattack involving Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK). Stryker reported that the attack hampered order processing, manufacturing and shipping. Most manufacturing operations resumed after about two weeks, with full recovery taking nearly one month Cybersecurity Dive; MassDevice.
Stryker continued to anticipate no significant impact on its 2026 guidance. Boston Scientific, meanwhile, has not issued a similar statement. According to its filing, the company is still assessing the extent of the incident and any possible operational or financial consequences.
Before the announcement, analysts maintained a positive long-term outlook. The consensus price target among 31 analysts stood at $62.69, which is 30.1% higher than the closing price on Wednesday, data from MarketScreener showed. Evercore reiterated its outperform rating with a $55 price target.
The risks are not limited to postponed sales. Boston Scientific flagged potential data loss, lawsuits, regulatory investigations, customer interruption and harm to reputation. The filing did not name the perpetrator or specify if protected data had been accessed.
At 04:01 EDT on Thursday, shares were indicated at $48.40 in premarket trade, marking a 0.48% gain from Wednesday’s closing price. The upcoming key indicator will be the rate of system restoration ahead of the U.S. market’s regular opening at 09:30 EDT.
