- Chipotle reported a 1.0% increase in same-store traffic in the last quarter.
- Restaurant-level margin declined by 220 basis points even though revenue increased by 9.3%.
- The Sunday promotion channels demand to a digital platform that accounts for 38.3% of sales.
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. NYSE:CMG introduced its largest back-to-school promotion to date on Thursday, setting the stage for investors to observe if such deals can boost slow traffic growth while avoiding greater pressure on margins.
Customers dressed in school clothing are eligible to purchase an entrée and get a second entrée at no cost after 3 p.m. local time. The promotion lasts for one day and is valid at select U.S. locations. Each transaction can include up to five complimentary entrées.
Three Sunday promotions are set for August 23, August 30, and September 6. Digital customers in the United States and Canada need to purchase a minimum of two entrées. A third entrée can be received at no cost by using the code SUNDAYS.
| Offer | Purchase hurdle | Channel | Illustrative equal-price discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| School Spirit BOGO, Aug. 20 | Purchase a single entrée | U.S. restaurants, from 3 p.m. until closing | As much as 50.0% |
| Chipotle Sundays, three dates | Purchase two entrées | U.S./Canada app or website after 3 p.m. | As much as 33.3% |
Structure is key. On Sundays, customers are required to place direct online orders with bigger baskets. This allows Chipotle to encourage more dinner orders and manage the discount rate.
Digital sales accounted for 38.3% of food and beverage revenue in the second quarter, up from 35.5% in the same period last year. Overall transaction growth reached just 1.0%.
| Second-quarter demand measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 or change |

Chief Executive Scott Boatwright stated the company is building momentum through menu innovations, rewards, and hospitality. The current promotion puts that approach to the test during a period marked by heightened price sensitivity.
The pressure on margins is evident. Restaurant-level operating margin dropped to 25.2% from 27.4%. Increased costs for beef, freight, wages and greater ingredient usage offset gains from menu pricing as well as reduced costs for avocado and dairy.
| Cost or profit measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restaurant-level operating margin | 25.2% | 27.4% | down 220 basis points |

Brand marketing head Stephanie Perdue stated the offers reach guests amid school schedules with “real food and great value.” For investors, it is also important that value leads to additional visits. Providing discounts for purchases that would occur regardless gives minimal advantage.
The stock was up 1.1% at $35.05 as of 12:54 EDT on Thursday, with approximately 5.5 million shares changing hands. Shares stayed 19.8% under their 52-week peak.

Chipotle added 100 company-operated restaurants during the previous quarter, with 80 locations featuring a Chipotlane. Growth initiatives were a key contributor to revenue gains, placing greater emphasis on traffic at established stores for overall valuation.
Risks: Increased Sunday traffic may help comps and boost rewards engagement. However, significant redemption activity, higher commodity costs, or lackluster incremental demand could further squeeze margins. The rate of promotion uptake has not yet been reported.
The clearest assessment arrives once the offers conclude. Investors will be watching for traffic gains exceeding 1.0% and stability in margins. Until that is demonstrated, a crowded dining room remains inconclusive.
Can discounts buy profitable traffic?
The back-to-school campaign targets dinner visits and direct digital orders. The investor test is whether traffic moves above 1% without another margin step-down.

Near the session high. Still 19.8% below the 52-week peak.
Two offers, two very different discount structures
In-store after 3 p.m.; school apparel required.
App or website after 3 p.m.; code SUNDAYS.
Demand improved, but traffic still carries the burden
Margin gave back 220 basis points
Food costs rose 80 bps; labor rose 30 bps.
Analyst risk/reward
Average target implies 25.0% upside. Ratings: 25 Buy/Strong Buy, 9 Hold.
Why mature-store traffic matters
New units drive reported growth. Promotions must prove they can also improve existing-store visits.
The measurable risk
High redemption without incremental visits can trade revenue for traffic optics. Stronger digital baskets and repeat rewards use would improve the economics, but promotion uptake is not yet disclosed.
