Costco closed on New Year’s Day: New Year’s Eve 2025 store hours for Walmart, Aldi, Tesco and more

NEW YORK, December 30, 2025, 19:04 ET

Major retailers in the United States are tightening holiday schedules for New Year’s Day. Discount grocer Aldi said it will close its U.S. stores on Jan. 1, while Costco listings show the membership warehouse club shut that day.

The shifts land as shoppers make last-minute grocery and pharmacy runs for New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and the federal holiday that follows. Store-by-store variations mean consumers often need to confirm local hours before heading out.

The calendar also compresses other errands. U.S. stock markets including the New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Thursday, and FedEx said its major parcel services will not operate that day, with modified service on Dec. 31.

Aldi said stores also operate limited hours on New Year’s Eve, and told customers to use its store locator to check local schedules.

Costco warehouse pages list shortened New Year’s Eve hours, including a Stafford Township, New Jersey, location showing 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and a full closure on Jan. 1.

Trader Joe’s said stores will be open until 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.

A guide from Cincinnati-area broadcaster WLWT listed Walmart stores as operating normal business hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, while chains such as Target and Walgreens may run limited hours at some locations.

Holiday rules can also affect what shoppers can buy. In Connecticut, liquor stores and grocery stores cannot sell alcohol on Jan. 1, and bars can stay open until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve instead of 1 a.m., CT Insider reported. “It is important to know your limit,” Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli said in a release. CT Insider

In Britain, where Jan. 1 is a bank holiday — a public holiday — grocers are also adjusting schedules. The Standard listed Tesco superstores at 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day, while Aldi and Lidl will be closed on Jan. 1.

Yahoo Finance published a similar guide, including Sainsbury’s hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

The Sun said pubs generally remain open on New Year’s Day, though late closing times can depend on local licensing rules and individual venues.

Retailers and local outlets stressed that holiday hours can vary by location — especially for in-store pharmacies and fuel stations — and advised shoppers to check store locators before making a trip.

  • ChatGPT Identifies Three FTSE 100 Stocks to Avoid Now
May 19, 2026, 2:57 PM EDT. Using ChatGPT, three FTSE 100 stocks flagged as risky were International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG), JD Sports Fashion (JD.), and Barratt Redrow (BTRW). IAG faces vulnerabilities from oil price shocks and geopolitical tensions but offers a low price-to-earnings ratio of 6.21, suggesting potential value. JD Sports confronts weakening consumer demand as the athleisure trend fades, advising caution for investors. Barratt Redrow grapples with UK housing market pressures, rising costs, and sustained high mortgage rates, implying a delayed potential turnaround. While these names pose risks, IAG might still be worth considering as a buy given the sector's growth prospects amid globalisation.
