Dow Jones live: Price weighting drives 500-point fall amid concerns on AI investment

NEW YORK, July 23, 2026, 12:12 p.m. (EDT) –

Stocks fell steeply by midday after the U.S. cash market opened. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 556 points, or 1.1%, to 51,663. Alphabet and Amazon.com were among the biggest drags.

The impact was heightened by the index structure. Alphabet’s $22.95 drop suggested a swing of around 136 Dow points, applying Thursday’s 5.94-point multiplier. This amount accounted for about a quarter of the index’s decline.

Alphabet was added to the Dow on June 29, taking the place of Verizon Communications . With the index weighted by price, Alphabet’s higher share price offered more direct exposure to AI spending.

Around midday, growth stocks were declining more sharply than the blue-chip index.

Figures in this snapshot represent late-morning trade levels. Estimated Dow moves are calculated at about 5.94 points per $1 change in component shares.

At that point in time, Alphabet and Amazon accounted for about 209 Dow points, representing nearly 38% of the drop. The Nasdaq’s fall exceeded the Dow’s by 1.5 percentage points.

Investors discounted Alphabet’s headline profit. Net income attributable to common shareholders came in at $112.1 billion. Additional income amounted to $98.0 billion, driven primarily by unrealized gains in equity.

The cash figures painted a contrasting picture. Capital expenditures for the quarter hit $44.9 billion, while free cash flow dropped to negative $5.9 billion. Alphabet updated its outlook for full-year capital spending, now projecting around $200 billion.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated, “Our AI investments are redefining what’s possible across every part of our business.” Cloud sales increased 82% to $24.8 billion. Q4Investor

Investors were seeking more clarity on returns. Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell (LON:AJB), said there was “a healthy degree of scepticism” about returns. Reuters

Tesla heightened worries over cash flow. Its stock fell roughly 14%. Free cash flow was negative for the first time in over two years.

Selling pressure was widespread. On the NYSE, losers led gainers by a ratio of 2.72-to-1, while on Nasdaq the ratio stood at 2.2-to-1.

Brent crude rose above $100 following attacks on Saudi tankers in the Red Sea. The yield on the 10-year Treasury approached 4.70%. Higher yields lower the present value of future profits.

Markets assigned a 38% probability to the Federal Reserve delivering a quarter-point rate hike next week, up from about 12% the previous week.

Risks remain on both sides. Reduced Red Sea tensions may push oil prices and yields down. Accelerated AI-driven cash returns have the potential to boost megacaps. However, additional tanker assaults or higher spending could amplify losses.
