DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) short interest at highest in a year as outlook reduced

SYDNEY, July 20, 2026, 10:11 AEST

Short positions disclosed in DroneShield Ltd totaled 118.7 million shares. The level on July 13 represented 12.84% of the company’s outstanding shares, marking a 52-week peak.

The notional value of the position was approximately A$254 million, based on Friday’s closing price of A$2.14. This amount corresponded to nearly 14.8 days’ worth of average recent share turnover.

The numbers indicate a two-way scenario. New orders may trigger covering, whereas ongoing delivery issues could prolong the decline.

The ASX cash market was trading at the time of publication. Public quotations continued to display Friday’s closing figures, as data is subject to a minimum 20-minute delay.

DroneShield dropped 7.76% on Friday and declined 6.55% across five sessions. Meanwhile, the S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) slipped roughly 0.11% over the same period. This created a performance gap of 6.44 percentage points.

Jefferies Financial Group Inc analysts lowered revenue projections for 2026–2028 by roughly 9%. In addition, they cut earnings-per-share estimates in a range of 5% to 16%.

Jefferies reduced its price target by 27% to A$2.05. Shares closed on Friday at a level nine cents higher, or 4.4% above the new target.

The level of short positioning was nearly double compared to Electro Optic Systems Holdings Ltd .

The table is based on ASIC reports, Friday closing figures, and Jefferies data. Variations are derived from these sources.

Since July 1, short interest climbed by 7.01 million shares while the number of shares outstanding remained steady at around 924.1 million. The uptick was due to shifts in investor strategies.

The bullish outlook remains supported by secured contracts. In June, a U.S. task-force contract provided an upfront A$19.3 million, with an additional A$5.6 million in five-year options available. Scheduled deliveries will take place during 2026 and 2027.

Chief Executive Angus Bean stated that the award demonstrated a “growing requirement for counter-drone capabilities across complex operational environments.” Company Announcements

The agreement underpins the demand scenario. Jefferies’ reductions make delivery schedules and revenue timing a key focus again.

Governance is also a factor in valuation. ASIC is examining disclosures and share transactions from November 2025. In May, DroneShield stated that the outcome of the probe was still uncertain.

Risks: ASIC data are delayed by T+4 and depend on reports from sellers. Revenue recognition may be impacted by contract timing. The ongoing investigation increases regulatory risk. Substantial short interest may intensify reversals.

Jefferies’ target was surpassed by just nine cents at Friday’s close. The upcoming major filing will encounter a substantial short interest.
