Indonesia’s Rupiah Rallies as Damayanti Nomination Eases Policy Risk

Jakarta, August 11, 2026, 07:08 WIB

  • President Prabowo Subianto nominated Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to lead Bank Indonesia.
  • The rupiah rose to its strongest level since June 18 after the announcement.
  • Parliament has one month to approve or reject the nomination.
  • The August 18–19 policy meeting is the first test of the promised continuity.

Indonesia’s rupiah rose to its strongest since June 18 after President Prabowo Subianto nominated Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for Bank Indonesia governor. The choice reduced the risk of a sharp policy break after Perry Warjiyo’s surprise resignation. Indonesia’s onshore markets had not yet opened for Tuesday’s session.

The initial relief is important, but it is narrow. Bank Indonesia has raised its benchmark rate by 100 basis points this year and deployed several market tools to steady the currency. Damayanti now inherits that defence while the government pushes for faster growth.

Investors know the nominee. Damayanti has served as senior deputy governor since 2019 and became acting governor after Warjiyo stepped down. That record makes continuity more credible than a political outsider would have been.

“Destry’s nomination is likely to be received well by the markets, given her extensive experience within the central bank as well as domestic financial markets,” DBS economist Radhika Rao said. She added that Damayanti had stressed currency stability and was likely to preserve the existing policy line. Reuters

Parliament has not rejected a presidential nominee for governor since 2008. The process still matters because Damayanti’s term length remains unsettled. Officials have not said whether she would serve through 2028 or begin a full five-year term.

Damayanti moved quickly to contain the shock from Warjiyo’s exit. “For the market, of course, we hope there is no need to panic,” she said on July 27. “Bank Indonesia will continue to implement the policies that we have carried out previously.” She also said the bank would remain active in spot and derivatives markets. Bank Indonesia held the benchmark rate at 5.75% in July. It also kept the deposit and lending facilities at 4.75% and 6.50%. The bank said its policy mix would continue to attract inflows, stabilise the rupiah and deepen foreign-exchange markets. Its official reserves stood at $145.59 billion at the end of June.

The defence goes beyond rates. The bank has offered hedging incentives and used high-yielding short-term securities to draw foreign capital. That raises the cost of any early pivot toward easier money.

Trimegah Sekuritas chief economist Fakhrul Fulvian called Damayanti “a pragmatic and stability-oriented policymaker with a pro-growth nuance.” Permata Bank chief economist Josua Pardede said her government ties could reduce friction. Yet, he warned, “markets will draw a sharp distinction between coordination and subordination.” Reuters

The government has also extended 200 trillion rupiah, or about $11.2 billion, of deposits at state banks through July 2027. Total placements were set to approach 400 trillion rupiah. The liquidity push sits beside a 5.4% official growth target and Prabowo’s goal of 8% by 2029.

That is the central trade-off. Fiscal liquidity can support lending and activity. It can also weaken the currency if investors expect monetary policy to absorb the cost.

Risks: Parliament could delay confirmation or narrow the governor’s mandate. A premature rate cut, heavier fiscal liquidity or a renewed oil shock could reverse the rupiah’s relief rally. Uncertainty over the term length also leaves the leadership horizon unclear.

The August 18–19 review is the decisive next catalyst. A hold at 5.75% would reinforce Damayanti’s continuity message. Any early easing would force investors to decide whether the nomination reduced political risk or merely changed its form.

Further analysis

Why did the rupiah rise after Destry Damayanti’s nomination?
The nomination reduced the risk of an abrupt policy break after Perry Warjiyo resigned. Damayanti has been a senior deputy governor since 2019 and was already serving as acting governor. The rupiah rose to its strongest level since June 18, but the move reflects relief rather than a new policy regime.
What monetary-policy position would Damayanti inherit?
Bank Indonesia’s policy rate stands at 5.75% after 100 basis points of tightening this year. The bank has also used hedging incentives, short-term securities and direct market operations to support the rupiah. Official reserves were $145.59 billion at the end of June. Those buffers provide room to act, but they do not remove pressure from global rates, oil prices or capital flows.
Why will investors keep watching central-bank independence?
The government wants faster growth and has expanded liquidity through deposits at state banks. Damayanti is seen as able to work closely with fiscal officials. Markets will judge whether that produces useful coordination or pressure for premature easing. The distinction matters because a softer policy stance could quickly reverse the rupiah’s relief rally.
What is the next decision point?
Bank Indonesia reviews policy on August 18–19. A hold at 5.75% would support Damayanti’s pledge of continuity. An early cut would raise questions about how the bank balances currency stability against the government’s growth goals. Parliament also has one month to approve or reject her nomination, and the length of her term remains unclear.
