Wall Street Targets Trail Moderna as Cancer-Vaccine Surge Continues

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., August 22, 2026, 11:34 EDT — Moderna’s shares have soared following progress on its cancer-vaccine program, leaving analyst price targets well behind the rally.

  • Moderna ended Friday at $145.13, gaining 8.9% with 86.7 million shares traded.
  • Shares rose 129.2% since August 14 following an encouraging Phase 3 melanoma data release.
  • The average Wall Street price target of $78.78 is 45.7% lower than the closing price on Friday.

Moderna, Inc. closed the week, its best in years, at $145.13. The biotech company’s shares climbed 8.9% on Friday, following a near-tripling of the stock’s value on Wednesday and a sharp drop on Thursday. From August 14, the five-day rally amounted to a 129.2% increase.

The trigger was favourable Phase 3 trial data for intismeran autogene. Moderna and Merck & Co., Inc. reported that the personalised mRNA therapy, used in combination with Keytruda, led to better recurrence-free and distant-metastasis-free survival following melanoma surgery. The trial, which enrolled 1,137 patients, achieved its primary goal along with a key secondary goal.

This marks a real clinical milestone. However, the valuation package remains incomplete. The companies have yet to reveal the Phase 3 hazard ratios, in-depth subgroup data, or overall survival information. Comprehensive results are anticipated at a medical conference later in 2026.

The biggest gap currently appears in analyst price targets. The updated average of $78.78 suggests a 45.7% drop from Friday’s closing price. Despite four significant target hikes, Bank of America’s $170 target is the only one indicating substantial upside.

The company’s caution is partly reflected in its balance sheet. Moderna posted $145 million in revenue for the second quarter, alongside a net loss totaling $782 million. Cash and investments dropped to $6.9 billion as of June 30, prior to a $950 million settlement paid in July.

Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel described the readout as “an extraordinary milestone for Moderna.” The findings add to Phase 2b trial data that indicated a 49% reduction in recurrence or death over five years. Moderna; Merck

Next week, investors are set to gauge if the new price remains stable in the absence of additional efficacy data. Adjustments to targets may persist. Lasting catalysts include comprehensive Phase 3 findings, talks with regulators, and proof that individualized manufacturing can sustain commercial profit margins.

Risks: The treatment is still experimental. Questions remain about when it could be approved, pricing, production expenses and long-term survival results. Moderna is also challenged by substantial cash outflows and reliance on income from seasonal vaccines.
