Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) shares down 1.9% on Friday; dividend seen as main driver

NEW YORK, July 25, 2026, 15:04 EDT — U.S. markets have finished trading.

  • Pfizer ended Friday at $24.54. Adjusted for its dividend, the stock slipped just 0.16%.
  • The weekly price return stood at minus 2.04%, while the total return registered approximately minus 0.32%.
  • The FDA’s priority review has introduced another oncology catalyst for the fourth quarter ahead of Pfizer’s August 4 earnings report.

Pfizer ended the session $0.47 under Thursday’s unadjusted close. Of that difference, the planned $0.43 dividend accounted for 91%.

FactSet put Thursday’s adjusted closing price at $24.58, which meant Pfizer slipped only 0.16% on Friday.

The difference is important for a stock with a 7.01% yield. Charts based only on price may exaggerate declines when a substantial dividend comes off.

Pfizer’s closing prices on July 17 and July 24 are the basis for the calculations. The total return factors in eligibility for the announced $0.43 dividend.

The weekly comparison shows a similar trend. Pfizer’s decline, factoring in the dividend, was less pronounced than that of the broader market.

The S&P 500 dropped 0.6% over the week. Pfizer outperformed this by about 0.3 percentage point in terms of total return.

Trading activity remained subdued. Friday’s turnover reached 28.9 million shares, which is 30% lower than the 65-day average.

This week’s corporate catalyst came following Wednesday’s market close, as the FDA awarded priority review to the proposed broader label for Talzenna in combination with Xtandi.

The Phase 3 TALAPRO-3 study included 599 participants. The combination lowered the risk of radiographic progression or death by 52% compared to Xtandi and placebo.

Jeff Legos, Pfizer’s head of oncology, said “intervening during the hormone-sensitive stage represents an important opportunity to delay progression.” The FDA plans to make a decision in the fourth quarter. Pfizer

Pfizer is requesting approval for use in an earlier phase of metastatic prostate cancer, noting that 5% to 10% of new diagnoses reach this stage. The company said as many as 30% could have the specific HRR alterations targeted by the treatment.

Pfizer rose roughly 0.6% after adjusting for the dividend between Wednesday’s close and Friday, as the initial reaction from the market was muted.

Pfizer is scheduled to announce its second-quarter earnings on August 4. The company maintains its revenue forecast for 2026 between $59.5 billion and $62.5 billion. Guidance for adjusted earnings is unchanged at $2.80 to $3.00 per share.

Upcoming days will provide peer indicators. Bristol Myers Squibb will announce results on July 30, with AbbVie set to follow on July 31. Eliquis sales from Bristol Myers are significant since the drug was jointly developed with Pfizer.

The risks remain apparent. Receiving priority review does not guarantee approval. Overall survival continues to be a critical secondary endpoint, and established blood-related toxicity could limit application.

Friday’s session did not result in a new breakdown. The week’s actual decline was modest, and the FDA review created a significant catalyst for later in the year.
