NEW YORK, August 19, 2026, 10:25 EDT — Sony’s PlayStation 5 ‘Wolverine’ game bundle is now on offer for $20 less than buying the console and game separately, as the company reports a 36% fall in shipments.
- Sony began taking preorders for Wolverine-themed PS5 hardware at 10:00 local time.
- The $649.99 bundle is $19.99 cheaper than purchasing the console and game individually.
- PS5 shipments declined by 36% last quarter, as gaming operating profit increased by 37%.
Sony Group Corporation NYSE:SONY began accepting U.S. preorders on Wednesday for a Wolverine-themed PlayStation 5 bundle, priced at $649.99. The bundle costs $19.99 less than purchasing the digital console and game individually at current prices.
The discount serves as a message to investors. Sony is leveraging a key first-party launch to drive hardware demand instead of imposing a premium on consoles. More of the monetisation responsibility falls on higher-margin accessories and digital purchases.
Sony’s U.S. depositary receipts ended Tuesday at $23.43, slipping 1.14%. The stock recorded declines in the previous two sessions. Shares were 22.8% lower than their 52-week high.
| U.S. offer | Price | Incremental value |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Existing regular price |
| Marvel’s Wolverine game | $69.99 | Standard digital version |
| Separate-purchase total | $669.98 | Game with console |
| Battle Yellow bundle | $649.99 | Save $19.99 |
| Limited DualSense controller | $84.99 | Accessory sold separately |
| Limited console cover | $74.99 | Accessory sold separately |
The special bundle features a digital PS5, a matching controller, and a game code. Battle Yellow and Adamantium controllers are available individually at $84.99. Console covers are priced at $74.99. Shipments start September 15, coinciding with the game’s release.
The release follows a sharp rise in console prices. In April, Sony increased the U.S. digital PS5 price by $100, now costing $599.99. “We know that price changes impact our community,” global marketing executive Isabelle Tomatis said. PlayStation Blog
| Game & Network Services | Q1 FY2026 | Q1 FY2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ¥937.1bn | ¥936.5bn | +0.1% |
| Operating profit | ¥202.0bn | ¥148.0bn | +36.5% |

| PS5 units shipped | 1.6m | 2.5m | −36.0% |
| Network services sales | ¥208.6bn | ¥172.6bn | +20.9% |
| Monthly active accounts | 125m | About 123m | +2% |
A hardware revenue per shipment estimate increased by 40% to ¥138,750 from ¥99,200. This figure is obtained by dividing “hardware and other” revenue by the number of PS5 units shipped. It does not represent the average price of a console, as the revenue also accounts for peripherals and additional products.
Nonetheless, the trend offers insight. Shipment volume dropped at a significantly quicker pace than hardware revenue. The latest bundle continues the approach of mixing products, without adding any extra visible fees.
Gaming profit climbed 36.5%, even as sales remained mostly unchanged. Gains were supported by foreign exchange benefits and refunds from U.S. tariffs. Revenue from network services increased by 20.9%, highlighting the strength of Sony’s recurring revenue streams.
| Analyst source | Recommendation | Target | Upside from $23.43 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernstein, July 31 | Hold | $23 | −1.8% |
| TD Cowen | Buy | $29 | +23.8% |
| S&P Global poll, four analysts | Buy consensus | $30 average | +28.0% |
| S&P Global high estimate | — | $34 | +45.1% |
Analyst opinions are divided. Bernstein’s $23 target is close to Tuesday’s closing price. The average estimate from polls is $30, reflecting expectations that increased gains from gaming, music, and sensors will offset ongoing pressure on hardware volumes.
New evidence is expected in September. Sony needs to turn limited-edition interest into increased sales of software, accessories and services. A rapid sellout would offer few insights unless unit numbers are disclosed.
Risks: Sony has not revealed the size of its bundle inventory. Sluggish consumer demand may restrict game and accessory revenue. Hardware margins could also be squeezed by memory expenses, tariffs and the PS5’s later-stage cycle.

Hardware volume is the weak link. Sony’s defence is mix: a discounted first-party bundle can seed software, controller and subscription spending. Watch attach rates, not sellout headlines.
