TYSONS CORNER, Virginia, August 24, 2026, 20:55 EDT —
- Strategy sold 18.26 million common shares for $2.01 billion last week.
- The company bought no bitcoin and created $1.59 billion of flexible cash.
- MSTR traded at $122.68 at 19:30 EDT, 32.6% above its August 18 close.
Strategy Inc. NASDAQ:MSTR sold 18,261,118 common shares for $2.0065 billion last week. It bought no bitcoin. The stock traded at $122.68 at 19:30 EDT on Monday, 2.9% above Friday’s close.
The stock’s rebound now faces a dilution test. MSTR has risen 32.6% from its $92.52 close on August 18. Yet last week’s share sales did not add to Strategy’s bitcoin position, which stayed at 840,447 tokens.
Strategy directed $136.4 million toward repurchasing STRC preferred shares. Another $300 million lifted its restricted USD Reserve to $5.10 billion. The remaining proceeds created a separate $1.59 billion “USD Cash” pool.
| Last week’s MSTR funding | Amount | Investor effect |
|---|---|---|
| Common shares sold | 18.26 million | Higher share count |
| Net proceeds | $2.0065 billion | New liquidity |
| STRC repurchases | $136.4 million | Supports preferred stock |
| USD Reserve addition | $300 million | Funds dividends and interest |
| New USD Cash | $1.59 billion | Flexible treasury capital |
The company received about $109.88 per share, based on net proceeds divided by shares sold. Monday evening’s $122.68 quote was 11.6% higher. That gap shows why at-the-market issuance can raise cash efficiently during a rally, though every new share reduces existing holders’ ownership.
Strategy’s combined USD Reserve and USD Cash reached $6.69 billion. That equals 10.6% of the $63.36 billion cost of its bitcoin holdings. The flexible pool can fund bitcoin purchases, debt actions or buybacks, while the reserve remains earmarked for preferred dividends and interest.
| Treasury measure | August 23 value | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin held | 840,447 BTC | 4.0% of bitcoin’s supply cap |
| Aggregate cost | $63.36 billion | $75,385 per BTC |
| USD Reserve | $5.10 billion | Restricted obligations pool |
| USD Cash | $1.59 billion | Flexible deployment pool |
| Total dollar liquidity | $6.69 billion | 10.6% of BTC cost basis |
The filing called USD Cash a “more flexible source of liquidity.” That flexibility may matter during sharp bitcoin or securities-market dislocations. Reuters noted that bitcoin gained more than 13% over the last five sessions as lower yields supported risk assets. Reuters
Bernstein analysts led by Gautam Chhugani said bitcoin has historically reacted positively to liquidity expansion. They also said Strategy’s cash reserves cover about 2.8 years of dividends.
Analyst targets remain unusually wide. Fifteen analysts tracked by StockAnalysis have a $229.07 average target and a Strong Buy consensus. At $122.68, that average implies 86.7% upside, but the range runs from $125 to $450.
| Analyst | Firm | Rating | Target | Upside from $122.68 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gautam Chhugani | Bernstein | Buy | $450 | 266.8% |
| Dan Dolev | Mizuho | Buy | $165 | 34.5% |
| Ramsey El-Assal | Cantor Fitzgerald | Overweight | $186 | 51.6% |
| Mike Colonnese | H.C. Wainwright | Buy | $325 | 164.9% |
| Nik Cremo | Barclays | Overweight | $125 | 1.9% |
| Consensus | 15 analysts | Strong Buy | $229.07 | 86.7% |
The wide target range reflects bitcoin assumptions rather than ordinary operating forecasts. Strategy’s common stock acts as a volatile claim on its bitcoin treasury, capital structure and issuance policy. The software business is now secondary to that valuation.
Investors will watch how the new cash pool is deployed. A bitcoin purchase would restore a familiar demand catalyst. Buybacks below net asset value could instead reduce dilution, while debt repayment would lower financial risk.
Risks: Bitcoin can reverse quickly. Further at-the-market sales could compress per-share exposure, even if the treasury value rises. A falling bitcoin price, a wider discount to net asset value or sustained preferred-stock pressure would weaken the rally.
The next weekly filing should show whether Strategy resumed bitcoin purchases. It will also reveal whether the $1.59 billion pool remains cash or becomes another source of market risk.
