Tencent (HKG:0700) Drops 5.8% as Share Buybacks Halted Ahead of Results

HONG KONG, July 26, 2026, 23:10 HKT — Market closed

  • Tencent shares closed at HK$434.60 on Friday, marking a 5.8% decline over the week.
  • The Hang Seng TECH closed nearly unchanged, with gaming company NetEase falling 7.4%.
  • Tencent ended trading 7.6% lower than the average purchase price reported in its most recent buyback disclosure.

Tencent Holdings shares dropped 5.8% last week, pressured by concerns over gaming and a buyback blackout ahead of earnings. The stock finished Friday at HK$434.60, down 2.4%.

The decline was not widespread among Hong Kong technology stocks. The Hang Seng TECH advanced 0.1%, and the Hang Seng index increased by 1.6%.

The gap signals a repricing unique to the company. It occurred during a period when Tencent’s usual share buybacks were on hold.

Weekly shifts are based on closing figures from July 17 and July 24.

The bulk of the decline occurred on Wednesday. Tencent dropped 7.05%, with 66.38 million shares changing hands—almost 1.9 times its usual volume.

NetEase shares dropped 7.39% on the day, with reports linking the decline to concerns over mobile-game performance for the second quarter and increased interest in AI hardware.

Citigroup analysts Alicia Yap and Nelson Cheung described the selloff as an “overreaction.” According to them, mobile billing trackers do not capture PC sales or deferred revenue recognition. BigGo Finance

Citi’s initial projection for domestic game revenue stands at 43.6 billion yuan, marking an 8% increase from a year earlier. Under its stress scenario, revenue would be 42.7 billion yuan, representing a 6% rise.

The buyback figures provide an additional indicator. Tencent bought back 1.065 million shares on July 9, spending HK$500.7 million.

The average price paid was HK$470.13. By Friday’s close, the share price had dropped 7.6% below that level.

Under Hong Kong regulations, companies are typically prohibited from conducting on-market buybacks within 30 days leading up to results unless there are exceptional circumstances. Tencent is set to release its second-quarter results on August 12.

The 1% recovery seen on Thursday reversed, as shares declined by 2.4% on Friday, closing just 5.7% higher than their 52-week low of HK$411.

The Federal Reserve will hold its meeting on July 28-29 this week. Investors are also awaiting China’s official July factory activity report. The previous month’s PMI was 50.3.

For Tencent, gaming continues to offer the clearest indicator. Investors need to assess if sales trackers or deferred revenue are more accurate for forecasting reported results.

Risks: Citi could see lower-than-expected demand for mobile games. Increased spending on AI and tighter U.S. chip regulations may weigh on returns.

Routine buybacks are limited until August 12, giving game data and fund flows greater influence on the shares.
