TORONTO, August 19, 2026, 12:08 EDT — The Toronto cash market began trading.
- The S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.9% to reach 36,653.47 as of 09:54 EDT.
- Materials climbed 5.4%, outpacing the benchmark by a factor of six.
- The index was still just 0.3% shy of its record close set on August 13.
Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index (INDEXTSI:OSPTX) gained 0.9%, reaching 36,653.47 as of 09:54 EDT on Wednesday. A three-day suspension of U.S. tariffs combined with a strong advance in mining shares ended the benchmark’s three-session losing streak.
The recovery exceeded what the headline indicates. Materials climbed 5.4%, which is precisely six times the index’s increase. Seven out of ten TSX sectors advanced, with miners providing the most pronounced momentum.
| Benchmark | Verified move | Level | Observation time |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P/TSX Composite | up 0.9% | 36,653.47 | 09:54 EDT |
| S&P 500 | 0.37% higher | 7,720.24 | 09:36 EDT |
| Nasdaq Composite | rises 0.26% | 26,356.89 | 09:36 EDT |
| Dow Industrials | advances 0.22% | 53,463.34 | 09:36 EDT |
The TSX finished 0.53 percentage point ahead of the S&P 500, and surpassed the Nasdaq by 0.64 point. The differential points to a resource-driven shift in Canada, rather than a straightforward continuation of U.S. tech market trends.
The index ended Tuesday at 36,367.93, its lowest level in 12 days. On Wednesday morning, it remained 105.82 points beneath its August 13 all-time closing high of 36,759.29, leaving a difference of just 0.29%.
| TSX driver | Move | Investor signal |
|---|---|---|
| Materials sector | +5.4% | Outperformed all primary sectors |
| Energy sector | +0.8% | Boosted by stronger crude |
| Aris Mining | +9.2% | Highest increase among reported index stocks |
| OceanaGold | More than +8% | Driven by gold surge and M&A outlook |
| Endeavour Silver | More than +8% | Benefited from sensitivity to precious-metal moves |
Gold provided operating leverage as spot bullion advanced 3.5% to $4,486.88, tracking declines in Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar. Shares of Aris Mining Corporation TSE:ARIS, OceanaGold Corporation TSE:OGC and Endeavour Silver Corp. TSE:EDR all gained more than the materials index.
Analyst recommendations for these miners continue to be favourable. The targets listed below are not directly comparable, as Aris trades on its U.S. listing, while the others are in Canadian dollars.
| Company | Consensus from analysts | Number of analysts | Target price average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aris Mining | Buy | 6 | US$37.00 |
| OceanaGold | Buy | 4 | C$60.13 |
| Endeavour Silver | Strong Buy | 8 | C$20.10 |
Tariff relief helped extend the rally. U.S. President Donald Trump delayed a planned 50% tariff on Canadian products for three days. “Trump’s announcement on a three-day pause is providing some relief to our Canadian equity market,” Raymond James portfolio manager Michael Dehal said. Reuters
| Cross-market input | Verified level | Why it matters to Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Spot gold | $4,486.88, +3.5% | Increases earnings leverage for miners |
| Brent crude | About $92 a barrel | Bolsters TSX with high energy sector exposure |
| WTI crude | $85.97 a barrel | Boosts price realization for Canadian oil producers |
| USD/CAD | 1.3823 | Loonie reaches highest point in 2½ months |
The Canadian dollar rose to 1.3823 against the U.S. dollar, equal to 72.34 U.S. cents, reaching its highest level in two and a half months. Gains in the currency indicated that the impact of tariff relief extended past stock markets.
The energy sector rose 0.8% with Brent crude holding close to $92. West Texas Intermediate climbed to $85.97. Gains in crude oil prices contributed to extending the rally beyond precious metals.
The danger is that both sources of support may swiftly reverse. The tariff pause remains in effect for just three days, and gold’s surge is linked in part to falling yields and a weaker dollar. If a trade agreement fails or the Federal Reserve adopts a hawkish tone, both currency and mining gains could be erased simultaneously.
Investors are now set to analyze the Federal Reserve’s minutes from its July meeting. For the TSX, the key question in the near term is whether non-resource sectors will participate in the rally ahead of the tariff pause ending.
