The U.S. stock market is closed Friday for the Independence Day holiday, so Thursday was the final session ahead of the long weekend. American Airlines Group Inc. NASDAQ:AAL dropped 1.27% to end at $17.92. The stock had touched a 52-week high at $18.79 earlier in the day. MarketWatch said AAL was up 32.74% over the past month and 65.31% across three months.
It was the volume that stood out, not the price. AAL finished Thursday at $17.92, the same close as Monday. But across those four sessions, 577.12 million shares traded, or about 87% of the 661.39 million shares MarketWatch lists as outstanding.
| AAL session | Close | Daily move | Volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 29 | $17.92 | up 0.28% | 122.47 mln |
| June 30 | $18.07 | up 0.84% | 157.87 mln |
| July 1 | $18.15 | up 0.44% | 166.69 mln |
| July 2 | $17.92 | down 1.27% | 130.09 mln |
This is key since finishing flat on big volume doesn’t leave much room if earnings miss. Short interest stood at 64.26 million shares, or 9.88% of float as of June 15, crowding the trade up near the high.
Peer numbers told a different story for AAL. On Thursday, AAL traded about $2.33 billion in dollar volume, close to four times United Airlines Holdings Inc. NASDAQ:UAL, despite American’s market cap at $11.85 billion compared to United’s $43.27 billion.
| Company | Last price | Daily move | Volume | Dollar volume | Share turnover |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Delta Air Lines Inc. NYSE:DAL | $92.75 | down 0.33% | 6.08 mln | $0.56 bln | 0.9% |
| United Airlines Holdings Inc. NASDAQ:UAL | $133.32 | off 1.35% | 4.46 mln | $0.59 bln | 1.4% |
| Southwest Airlines Co. NYSE:LUV | $50.25 | slipped 0.46% | 4.56 mln | $0.23 bln | 0.9% |

Share turnover is calculated using volume divided by implied shares from market cap and last price. Peer stock prices, trading volumes and market valuations are taken from current market data.
BMO Capital bumped its target on AAL to $19.50 from $13.50, sticking with market-perform, according to MarketBeat. TD Cowen set a higher target of $24, up from $20, with a buy rating. The MarketBeat report listed the average price target at $18.89 and the consensus at hold.
American Airlines is going into Q2 with a tight bar. CEO Robert Isom in April said the carrier had “record revenue in the first quarter” and was “on track for another record” in Q2 as “Demand for our product is growing.” The company is guiding for Q2 revenue growth between 13.5% and 16.5%, capacity up 4% to 6%, and adjusted EPS between a loss of 20 cents and a profit of 20 cents. The stock now trades on whether that revenue can offset fuel and cost headwinds. American noted its Q2 guide assumed jet fuel near $4.00 a gallon, with the midpoint of its 2025 earnings outlook coming in about flat even as the company faces more than $4 billion in extra costs from higher jet fuel prices.
Next up is tracking holiday travel. Reuters said Thursday that AAA sees 72.2 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles from home from June 27 to July 5, a small rise from 71.8 million last year. AAA expects travel to get a lift from the U.S. 250th anniversary and World Cup interest. AAA also puts the number of domestic air travelers at 5.85 million for the week, up 0.2%. Round-trip domestic airfares to top spots should average about $830.
Reagan National airport, a big spot for American, is set for disruptions this week. Travel Weekly said the airport will be closed to flights for several hours July 3 and most of July 4. On July 4, no flights are set from noon on, with the airfield shut for fireworks and aerial displays.
