Crown Holdings (NYSE:CCK) shares recover post-earnings as buybacks contribute 40% to EPS increase

NEW YORK, July 20, 2026, 4:52 p.m. EDT

Crown Holdings gained 1.1% during after-hours trade on Monday. As of 4:49 p.m. EDT, the stock was at $115.84. Crown Holdings had ended the regular session at $114.58, falling 2.2%.

Adjusted earnings stood at $2.49 per share, surpassing the FactSet consensus by 15%. Revenue exceeded expectations by nearly 9%, coming in at $3.67 billion. Crown increased its adjusted EPS outlook for 2026 to between $8.30 and $8.50.

GAAP net income increased to $245 million, up from $181 million. Diluted GAAP earnings were $2.23 per share.

The concern for investors centers on earnings quality. Sales were boosted by metal-cost recovery, and share buybacks significantly increased per-share growth.

The midpoint of the updated guidance stands at $8.40, representing a 3.7% increase. At the late session price, Crown was valued at roughly 13.8 times this number. The stock’s close on Friday suggested a valuation of 14.4 times the earlier $8.12 consensus.

The sales beat requires closer analysis. An initial estimate indicates that cost pass-through and currency effects accounted for 82% of the rise. The balance, $92 million, represented 2.9% of sales from the previous year. This is not an official organic sales figure.

Key comparisons are listed below. FactSet provided the consensus estimates.

Segment income increased by 5.3% to $501 million, but accounted for a smaller portion of sales at 13.7%, down from 15.1%. Some of the increase in shipments was eroded by inflation.

Share repurchases had an impact. Adjusted net income increased by 9.6%, as adjusted earnings per share climbed 15.8%. The number of diluted shares declined 5.2% compared to a year ago.

A first estimate suggests the share-count effect is almost 13 cents, representing about 39% of the 34-cent rise in EPS. The remainder was driven by increased adjusted earnings.

Crown bought back $517 million in shares in the first half, surpassing adjusted free cash flow for the same period by $45 million. The company continues to project at least $900 million in full-year cash flow.

Worldwide beverage-can shipments climbed 5%. Asia saw growth in the double digits. Europe advanced by 7%, and North America was up 5%. Latin America declined.

CFO Kevin Clothier said the global beverage can market is strong. He pointed to solid factory results and a robust balance sheet. Net leverage finished at 2.5 times adjusted EBITDA.

Crown rose 5.2% last week, finishing Friday’s session at $117.21 after reaching a 52-week peak of $118.50. On Monday, the stock slipped, while the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) eased 0.2%.

The upcoming test is slated for Tuesday. Crown will hold its earnings call at 9 a.m. EDT. Investors are looking for updates on Latin America, cost recovery, and share buyback speed.

Risks stem from weaker demand, inflationary pressures, and potential delays in construction. Disruption in the Middle East may impact logistics or raise costs for raw materials. Substantial buybacks place greater emphasis on cash conversion in the latter half.
